David Moore answers your Mavericks and Cowboys questions (03/10/2010)
11:02 David Moore: Want to thank everyone for jumping on today. Don't know if I can be as good as the Mavericks have been during this win streak, but let's give it a shot.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:02 David Moore

David any indication if the Boys are high on Taylor Mays. I think he is just a faster version of Roy williams and does not tackle well at all..He also struggled in pass coverage as well and im worried if he slips for some reason the Boys would take him..

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:02 david
11:04 David Moore: How can any team not be high on Mays after what he did at the combine? That being said, you're description of Mays as a faster Roy Williams is valid. He's known for his hitting skills, not his coverage ability, although with his speed he will be able to compensate for mistakes in coverage. If you're concerened of seeing Roy Williams II here, don't be. Mays won't slip to the Cowboys pick at No. 27, and I don't envision them moving up to get him.

Dave, do the Boys have any interest in OJ Atogwe right now seeing as though Hamlin isn't a playmaker in the secondary.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:04 Brad from Maryland
11:05 David Moore: Oshiomogho Atogwe _ spell that fast three times _ is on the Cowboys radar screen. He's shown an ability to make plays, which this team needs in the secondary. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes in for a visit, but at this stage, nothing is scheduled.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:05 David Moore
11:05 Todd Davis: A quick update from Eddie on the Mavericks, David. Erick Dampier and Brendan Haywood are expected to be in the lineup tonight, but J.J. Barea is still out.

If we do not address Saftey through Free agency what do you see our chances are for a Superbowl with our current roster guys and a drafted rookie? Same with Wide Receiver?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:06 jonathan
11:08 David Moore: If this team fails to advance to the Super Bowl next season, I don't know if it will be because they failed to upgrade the safety position. The Cowboys can get better there, but I don't think their lack of big plays from the safety spot is holding them back. They were still an outstanding defense. I'd say the same at wide receiver. While you would like greater production from the No. 2 receiver spot than the Cowboys have gotten, Jason Witten is essentially the second receiver. Again, you can upgrade here, but I don't think it's holding you back.
As for Super Bowl chances, it's a little early to address those.

when do you expect haywood and damp to be back? Do you think that all of these injuries will be a good thing long run because now everyone has to contribute as a team?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:08 zc
11:09 David Moore: I would imagine Haywood will be back within days and Dampier before the end of the month. If both are fresh for the playoff run, then the time off to nurse the injuries is a plus. Still, this team doesn't want to go an extended period playing small. That disrupts the rhythm and the repetition they will need with their more traditional big lineup heading into the playoffs.

I Think The Mavericks can win it all this yeah this year but people doubt it

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:10 Shawn Todd
11:11 David Moore: They should doubt it. Until the Mavericks get past the Lakers in the playoffs, everyone should doubt their ability to win it all. And let's not leave it at the Lakers. Another series with Denver isn't a sure thing for Mavericks fans.

11:11 [Comment From TrentTrent: ]
How much of a need is WR for the Cowboys? I keep hearing that they might draft a receiver early, but where will that person fit? Roy has already been guaranteed a starting spot and we still have Miles Austin and Patrick Crayton.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:11 Trent
11:13 David Moore: How do you define need? Again, I don't see it as a need, necessarily, but I do think the Cowboys can upgrade the position and make themselves a more difficult team to defend.
Crayton is a solid and productive third receiver on an elite team. The question then becomes do you bring in a player who will replace Williams? I know a lot of people are down on Williams, but I don't see anyone coming in from the start of camp who will be in a position to take his job.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:13 David Moore
11:13 [Comment From robrob: ]
who would you select as your number one draft choice at the 27th pick

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:13 rob
11:16 David Moore: Who will be available at this spot will change repeatedly over the next few weeks. So let me cop out and offer a pool of players that could be on that plateau: Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell, USC offensive taclke Charles Brown, Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham, UCLA ndefensive taclke Brian Price and Florida State cornerback Patrick Robinson. I assume those players would be in the discussion.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:16 David Moore

Is there a REAL possibility that the Cowboys will cut Flozell Adams? He frustrates me like everyone else, but do we want to leave Tony's backside protection to Doug Free or a rookie?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:16 Trent
11:18 David Moore: I think there's a possibility. I wouldn't call it a probablility. I agree with you. In my mind, releasing Adams does not make the offensive line better next season. He's still a solid player. The Cowboys are better off with him on the roster while developing someone behind him to take over.
Don't discount that these rumblings are leverage to get Adams to lower his contract. If he was on the books at a lower price, I don't believe this would even be an issue.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:18 David Moore
11:18 [Comment From TrentTrent: ]
What do you think about the Cowboys' inactivity in free agency? I personally love it. This team has needed to get younger for a while, and it seems that signing free agents works against that strategy.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:18 Trent
11:20 David Moore: I also think they are wise to take it slow. I also find it amusing that for year, Jerry Jones has been criticized for a fantasy football approach to free agency, where he throws money at big names players with no regard to chemistry. Now, he has a team with good chemistry and a nice balance of youth and veteran leadership, and some people are gnashing and wailing over their inactivity in the first few days of free agency.
Good things come to those who wait, or so I've heard.

Should the Cowboys address safety in the draft, free agency, or trade? What about Ryan from Pittsburg? Is he just another Roy Williams?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:21 Keith
11:25 David Moore: There are a lot of good safeties in this draft who should be there in the second and even the third round. That would be a good value pick
.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:25 David Moore
11:25 [Comment From inkydinkystinkypinkyinkydinkystinkypinky: ]
I've heard the arguments about not cutting Roy Williams because of he will get paid either way, but "why not", if he's not living up to his salary and there are others available, on the roster, and through the draft, who can produce more? I read a note on espn.com, from the football outsider, saying they could still save $3.5M by cutting him. Seemed like Patrick Crayton was irked about Roy Williams lack of production and seeming safe spot on the field.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:25 inkydinkystinkypinky
11:27 David Moore: It's clear at this stage that when you factor in the salary and the draft picks the Cowboys gave up for Williams, he will not give Jones an equitable return on investment. Because he works hard, because his attitude continues to be good, the Cowboys and Williams are dedicated to making this work. Now, if 2010 unfolds the way 2009 did, that's when you can talk about releasing him.

How is Butler coping with straw withdrawls?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:28 Mark

11:28 [Comment From DanielDaniel: ]
When Damp and Haywood are both healthy, will we ever see the Mavs use a 3 7-footer lineup? Would the size help them counter the Lakers with Bynum, Gasol, and Odom?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:28 Daniel
11:30 David Moore: I doubt you would see that for any extended stretch. Any benefit you get in size is negated by what you lose in spacing on the offensive end. Shawn Marion is fine, because he has the size and strength to cover Odom.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:30 David Moore
11:30 [Comment From shanardshanard: ]
david, on the mock drafts (which is not accurate) i've seen one where dez bryant is there at 27 i mean you jump on it right BPA and it gives u a year to see what roy williams has in an uncapped year right.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:30 shanard
11:31 David Moore: Bryant at No. 27? If he's there, the Cowboys should jump on him. But I can't envision a scenario where he's there.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:31 David Moore
11:31 [Comment From DanielDaniel: ]
With Barea now out, how many more players would the Mavs have to lose before we should be concerned about the Nets or Knicks? Are the Mavs considering any 10-day contract candidates to make sure they can at least field a team to claim these easy victories?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:31 Daniel
11:32 David Moore: If Barea is only out for a few days they will ride this out. But the longer the Mavericks have to play with eight and nine players _ and remember, the healthy bodies are some of the older ones _ the better chance a team like the Knicks can jump up and upset them.

11:33 [Comment From JasonJason: ]
Are the mavs playing good enough to win it all... Finally

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:33 Jason
11:35 David Moore: I think this team is better than the one that went to The Finals a few years ago. I also think that the Lakers, Denver and Utah are all stronger than the Phoenix team the Mavericks beat in the Western Conference Finals that year to advance.
Can they win it all? I would still lean toward saying no at the moment, but it will be fun to watch.

Can the cowboys be a better team in 2010 with there current roster and draft picks?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:35 Brent
11:39 David Moore: Argument one: yes, they can be better with their current roster and a few draft picks. The Cowboys have some good, young players at key positions on the rise. Their natural development should make them better. Plus, a large part of their rookie class was injured last season. If they contribute...
Argument two: no, they can't be better with their current roster and a few draft picks. The Cowboys went through last season with no major injuries at key positions. How often does that happen?
Take your pick.

11:39 [Comment From DanielDaniel: ]
Was Marty B's one year with T.O. a detriment to his maturation process? He seems to have had a big mouth when the Cowboys drafted him, but his recent comments are a bit unsettling. Between this and Jerry Jones blaming coaches and qb for not getting Roy W and Marty B more involved, are the Cowboys already moving away from the Romo friendly offense of a year ago?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:39 Daniel
11:41 David Moore: I know T.O. gets blamed for a lot of things, but Marty B.'s personality was established before he ever came in contact with Owens. The Cowboys often roll their eyes and Bennett's comments and take it as immaturity. I think they're doing the same now, while getting across he needs to be more focused and disciplined if he's to reach his potential.

How much longer does Jerry wait things out? I think there are ALOT of solid vets who have been released.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:41 Guest
11:43 David Moore: I know there is impatience out there, but let me point this out. Heading into yesterday, only 10 of the 32 teams had signed a free agent that did not end the 2009 season on their roster. None of those teams had made the playoffs. The Cowboys aren't the only playoff team that is sitting back and letting the market unfold.

Is Marcus Spears getting a bad rap as a result of being the unglorious defensive end in a 3-4 scheme? I think he's done a nice job in Wade's scheme. What does the defensive coaches tell you about Marcus?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:43 dwayne from New York
11:45 David Moore: Spears has done a nice job. And you hit on it. He's done as nice job as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme. He's a two-down player who comes off the field on passing downs. That limits the impact he has on the defense. I don't know that he's gotten a bad rap, but I do think it's easy to overlook how well he's played.

What do you think of the hypocritical precedent Jerry Jones is setting with his ball club by wanting his players 'nervous', all except the ones that would expose his poor decisions and wasted money (i.e. Roy Williams)? I know Jerry is stubborn, but, if he himself is going to come out stating publicly that his players need to be looking over their shoulder, then it seems to me that it should include the whole team (regardless of name or contract).

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:45 Guest
11:47 David Moore: I don't think it's hypocritical. Jones said yesterday that he believes there is already enough pressure on Williams without him adding to it. I agree. Williams knows the position he's in. He knows very few plays were run for him at the end of the season becasue he did not prove he deserved to have the ball come his way. He doesn't need Jones dumping on him to get the message.

Beaubois is getting very few minutes at the point mostly he's at the 2. Looking at next season, having had the summer and training camp will he be ready to take over the bulk of the point backup minutes? Will that lead to a Barea trade before the deadline next year?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:51 Robert
11:52 David Moore: I view Beaubois more as a Leandro Barbosa at this stage. He can play some minutes at the point, but he's more of a shooting guard. I don't know if next year is enough time for him to be regarded as the true backup point.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:52 David Moore
11:52 [Comment From guynesguynes: ]
I know rotations generally tighten during the playoffs anyway, but does the Mavs' brass really feel confident that going 12 strong - three of which are Eddie, JJ, and Matt Carroll - is really the formula for success? I feel like even when we're fully healthy we're walking a thin line in case someone gets hurt (even an ankle tweak could be a disaster) or foul trouble comes into play.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:52 guynes
11:53 David Moore: The rotation will tighten during the playoffs, but players will get spot duty depending on matchups and injury. Don't think you'll see much of Najera or Carroll in the playoffs.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:53 Victor
11:54 David Moore: I think the Cowboys have some young players at the position they like and want to develop. I wouldn't rule it out, but I don't think it's at the top of the Cowboys to do list.

Who starts at center when both Haywood and Damp are back?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:54 Rich P
11:55 David Moore: This, as they say, will have to be managed. But Haywood clearly brings more to the table on offense and is a better shot blocker. He deserves to start.

What do you think the ceiling is for Roddy Beaubois? How quickly can he get there?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:55 Whip
11:56 David Moore: I mentioned Barbosa earlier, and that's a pretty good place to start. Perimeter speed is essential in today's NBA. Beaubois has it. Whether he picks up on the nuances of the game will determine if he has a great impact moving forward than Barbosa.

Has anyone seen Buehler working on fg kicking?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:56 P1 Steven
11:57 David Moore: I have not seen it with my own eyes, but I do know it's taking place. The Cowboys want him to earn the job next season and will give him every opportunity to do so. That doesn't mean it will be handed to him, and Buehler knows that. He also knows if he can't become a solid field goal kicker in this league, his days of hanging around on kickoffs will soon come to an end.

Wednesday March 10, 2010 11:57 David Moore
11:59 David Moore: Also wanted to go back to Roger's question earlier about Spears and when the Cowboys would get the draft pick. Since restricted period would end before the draft, the Cowboys would get the pick in 2010 in the scenario he described.

If the top OL in the NFL Draft is no longer available in the 1st round and decides to draft a safety, who would you prefer the Cowboys pick between USC's Taylor Mays and Texas' Earl Thomas and why?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 12:02 Guest
12:03 David Moore: I would lean toward Thomas because of his coverage ability. That being said, I doubt either player will still be there when the Cowboys pick so the point, as they say, is moot.

12:03 [Comment From TrentTrent: ]
Can we afford to NOT draft an OT this year in the draft? And why is it that we have done such a bad job of developing/drafting offensive linemen here? We've had SO many busts drafting at that position (James Marten, Peterman, etc.)

Wednesday March 10, 2010 12:03 Trent
12:04 David Moore: The Cowboys will take an offensive lineman or two in this draft, but that doesn't mean they will take one in the first round. The Cowboys have also developed a lot of good offensive linemen that have been taken in the second and third round. Does the name Larry Allen ring a bell? I know he rang a lot of bells of defensive linemen.

I heard Jordan Shippley ran a slow 40 at the combine, does this concern you? Would you take him over someone like Jacoby Ford (who blazed the 40) but didn't have Shippleys college production as a reciever but is a better kick and punt returner?

Wednesday March 10, 2010 12:05 zc
12:06 David Moore: Don't know if I'd take Shipley over Ford because of the speed. But Shipley is a slot receiver. There is a lot more that goes into that position than blazing, straight line speed. I think he'll be a productive NFL player.

Greg Ellis won't be in Dallas unless we get hit hard by injuries during the season and nobody has signed him yet.

Ware and Spencer would be rushing on pass downs, and they like what they have with Williams who was hurt last year and Butler played well at times. The guy would be lucky to see 3 snaps a game, and he's not going to add anything on special teams.

On it's face I agree with you completely.

But I's add the caveat that the injuries wouldn't have to occur in season because many occur in training camp as Brandon Williams' did last year. If BW is out again then I think Greg Ellis, assuming he is available, gets a call.

Ellis is seriously on the decline but he'd be by far the Cowboys best 20 snap a game pass rush option if BW is out again. Butler and guys like Octavien are not there yet and may never get there. Ellis is a one trick pony nowadays but that's a pretty decent trick to have if you just want to eat off the NFL.
