Davis/Colombo Theory

Anyone think Jerry is trying to get Davis signed first before going after Colombo.

Strictly from a money aspect, it makes a tad bit of sense.

Davis is in line for the bigger deal so by signing him 1st it gets him locked before Colombos #s come out. Going the other way around, Davis would most definently base his comparitive worth off of Colombo and could end up setting his price way more then hes really worth.

I just started wondering this because I haven't heard of Colombo meeting with anyone. Reports had him talking to Denver but nothing has become of that so Im wondering if Jerry might have him sitting on his hands, tell him he will get his due when the time comes.

The only problem with this line of thought is it means that Jerry had a plan.......not sure if thats possible.

One can only hope he has some sort of idea what is going on.

No - I think Jerry & Colombo disagree on what Colombo's value is, and so they decided to allow Colombo to discover what the market is willing to pay. We will then see if we agree with that market rate and pay it if it is agreeable.

I think Davis is just insurance.

It sure wouldn't surprise me if Jerry didn't use it all to his advantage by at least having Davis think that their is a possibility he could play RT.

I've already thought this. More importantly, signing Davis gives Jerry and the Cowboys a lot of options. By getting Davis in the bag, you have the option of bringing back Colombo at your price. If you don't, you've already got a guy who can give you just as much or more in Davis. And of course, Davis' versatility allows you to be able to give your young kids (Procter and McQuistan) a chance at playing time. Basically, if you are sure you want to let at least one of them play, you can osrt of let them compete against each other. If McQuistan is better, you put Davis at guard. If Procter is better, you put Davs at tackle. If Colombo comes back, you've got a relatively loaded O-Line.

I think it's a little simpler than that, hoof, and here's my theory:

Jerry got burned bad by his foray into free agency last year... as a result, he's being more cautious this year than he has in recent years... one manifestation of that caution is a reluctance to throw big money at a "name" free agent to get him signed before he tests his worth on the open market... this is, of course, the tactic he used in years past to get a big name signing or two on the first day or so of free agency...

So this year, it looks to me like he's trying a new approach, one designed to keep him from overpaying-- he's telling the buys he negotiates with to go around and get some offers, then come back to him, and give him a chance to match (if the numbers aren't Derrick Dockery obscene)...

It's a bit of a risk, gambling that the player won't just take the other team's offer, but I can see some sense in that approach...

The fact that Davis actually got out of Washington with no deal and is heading back to Texas really supports your theory.

This is very good business move by Jerry, throwing tons of $$$ at above average players (see Dockery and Clements) is just dumb.

I really think Davis will be signed tommorow or on Monday, Columbo I have no idea about.

Dallas newspapers report Colombo met with Denver on Friday, March 2, but the Denver newspaper mentions all those players who visited Denver that day but they did not say Colombo visited. Denver newspaper did say that Denver was interested in Colombo but AGAIN they did not say he visited Denver. That may be knitpicking but I think it sounds right.

If we end up with Columbo and Davis on the roster at a reasonable price (although I'm not sure what "reasonable" is right now), I'll be pretty happy.

There is probably a lot of talk going on behind the scenes. I think it was Nolan yesterday (49'ers coach) who said there was a ton of discussion behind the scenes for every deal that actually got done. Columbo really has only had one season of work with all the injury problems and that isn't great leverage in the FA market even in a talent thin year. Coaches haven't seen a lot of him and questions will remain on his injury status until he has more "healthy" playing time.

Columbo continues to be an interesting player. How would you price him today? Will he continue to improve or has he reached his potential? Has his career been shortened by the massive injury he sustained? He's still a bit of an enigma and his market value will be hurt by that, even in this "off season of the linemen."

We right now still have a hole at tackle. If we do not sign anyone then McQ is probably going there. I hope he is as good as BP and some other teams think he is.

If Davis is getting more money than Steinbach and Dockery, he best be our option at RT. Then, go sign a RG to a short contract (ala Holland).

Colombo really worrie me. Will he improve? Was this a "contract year" performance? Will he fall apart again? I'd be scared to give him $13 mil guaranteed and $5 mil a year.

With Davis being signed, I think Colombo is out of the picture. I just don't think JJ wants to invest that much money in the OL. And I don't know if Colombo is going to come down now that we paid big money for someone who would be a RG if Colombo is signed. I hope I'm wrong, b/c I don't like the thought of Davis and Rivera/Proctor on the right side.
