CBS has this kid listed as a 3rd rounder right now, but look for him to shoot up boards quickly. Really like that he got a chance to play under Lovie Smith and Hardy Nickerson his SR year, not only great coaching but Rod should have a strong insight to him as well. He's listed at 6'3 255 and was a high school all state hurdler, and the athleticism shows. 14 sacks, 30 TFL, and 5 FF the past 2 years.

Didn't think about the Lovie Smith connection. Smoot can't play against the run. Weak at the POA. I don't think he will dominate at the combine but has a knack for rushing the passer.

For somebody as big as him he sucks vs the run. If they aren't going to play the run we may as well get his teammate Phillips

I think he has a tendency to get to far up field rushing the passer. If its a run at him then he is out of position and has not set the edge. The Illini Offense this year was horrible. The Defense was on the field for way too long. I think he goes within the first 2 rounds. Phillips was also a nice player as was LB Nickerson. Nickerson I'd love to get as a 6th or 7th round LB/Special teams guy.

Hardy Nickerson was a great LB

Anyways on topic, if I had to put money on a DE as far as who we would draft if we took 1 in the first, it would be Smoot. He is a good fit for a one gap, uphill line scheme and has alot of potential as a RDE. He is rated all over the place right now but I see him as a late first early second guy

I have seen him mocked to the Cowboys. The logic was the Lovie/ Marinelli connection. Not seeing it myself.

I do see some similarities in how he is coached to the way Marinelli coaches DEs. He rarely tries to beat the OT purely with speed by rushing wide and deep up-field. He is normally immediately engaged with the blocker and plays a contain-while-pass-rushing style.

He is decent at taking on and playing off blocks. He has good first step but his burst seems average.

He gets into the backfield often but struggles to close on either sacks or tacking the RB. I'm not sure how much of that is being out of position vs lacking lateral agility. I think it's some of both.

I think he is a legit NFL player, but I don't know if he will be worth a 1st round pick.

Hes lost his 1st round grade. Other DEs like Landry, McKinley, Solomon Thomas, and possibly even his Illinois teammate Carroll Phillips already have or will push him down the DE rankings. Wouldn't surprise me to see him go mid 2nd round though.

I agree, by draft time he may slide down and even Phillips pass him. Being an Illinois fan and attending games, I liked watching him play. But then again it didn't take much to impress when the team sucked so bad! LOL

Phillips is physically and athletically getting some comparisons to Leonard Floyd from last year. If he shows good explosion at combine he could earn a 1st round grade. I know he does have some past off field issues though. not sure what they are tho. Has he done anything that could kill his chance at a 1st round grade?

His sophomore year he was suspended I think. I cant remember what the issue was.
