Dont think NE will trade that high for Lamar Jackson.

Might do for Josh Allen but Lamar?

Rumors are that the Patriots are very high on Jackson, and Tom Brady in particular has commented on him publicly. They also may feel the need to move ahead of Miami.

All of the rumors that New England is high on Lamar Jackson makes me think they are playing everybody and have no real interest.

James is a top 10 pick...Lamar could go Pats at #23...noway Pats trade 2 1st round picks for a QB..when they took a 2nd for JimmyG

The counter argument is that the reason the Patriots traded Cooks is so they have the draft capital to go get the QB they want this year, so they can develop him behind Brady. Remember that they recently spent a 3rd round pick on Brissett, in anticipation of losing Garoppolo. So, they are looking at more athletic type QB's seriously. They already run the majority of their plays from the spread formation, so that fits in line with Belichick leading the way on the evolution of the NFL. Lamar Jackson would fit into that picture quite well. Not only is he fast, but he has a powerful arm. And Brady and Belichick could groom him on the mental aspects of the game.

I honestly believe that Jackson is their target. It's not a smoke screen. The only question is will they need to move up in the draft to get him, and if so, how much. They also have two 2nd round picks to use to trade up.

  • 23+31 gets them to pick 9 (ahead of Buffalo and Miami)
  • 31+43+63 gets them to pick 10, ahead of both Miami and Buffalo, but that is giving up 3 picks - something Oakland might be very interested in doing. Not sure if the Patriots want to give 3 picks in the top 63 to move up.
  • 23+43 gets them to pick 12, but only if Buffalo trades that pick away. Miami and Buffalo aren't going to trade down with the Patriots at picks 11 or 12.
  • 31+43 gets them to pick 15, but Arizona is also looking for a QB, so they probably need to get ahead of them.
  • 31+63 gets them to pick 19, if Dallas is interested in trading back
  • 23+95 also gets them to pick 19, if Dallas doesn't want to trade all the way down to 31, or if the Patriots don't want to give up a 2nd round pick.
