After Day 2 my grade holds steady at a B-.

I liked the picks better than most it seems as consensus draft boards rated them pretty poorly for various reasons.

Pick 44: Kelvin Joseph. Joseph was the 4th best CB in this draft for me. He has some off field concerns after a Bowl game suspension that saw him transfer. But he's only 20 years old, locked up DeVonta Smith tighter than a drum, and brings ball skills and 6'1" size to the table. Really good fit.

Pick 75: Osa Odighizuwa. Nose Tackle at UCLA in a 3-4. Probably a Tyrone Crawford starter kit. Really, really strong persistent inside guy who can handle any role along the DL depending upon down. I think you can put him at DE on run stuff downs and play him inside on pass rush downs. My guess is this guy has a long NFL career with a lot of 4 and 5 sack seasons.

Pick 84: Chauncey Gholston. Edge out of Iowa who was a Team Captain. Not a plus pass rusher but plays hard. Dorance Armstrong type guy with consistent tape. Limited upside as a speed rusher but can set an edge.

Pick 99: Rahshon Wright CB, Oregon St. Wright is a very long CB with great ball skills. He tested insanely poorly in agility and strength areas and was off many boards all together. But I actually really like this pick for Dallas. He is the prototype guy in a Cover 3. He is very long and he is always ball hunting. He's is not a get in your pocket guy by any means but he doesn't have to be as he plays a back off into zone then go get ball role. He changed games at Laney College than again at Oregon State with big plays. His brother was on Last Chance U before joining him at Oregon State. Oakland kid who grew up trying to be Richard Sherman.

Pros:
-Definitely loaded up on defense and because of that the roster spots are there to be won. LB, CB, DL, Edge, CB checks a lot of boxes.
-Kelvin Joseph was a very solid sleeper get at CB. I think he starts day 1. Higher ceiling than Diggs for me. Shut D. Smith out in college. Was my CB4 and CB3 flew off board by the high 20s.
-Scheme fits make these feel like Quinn selections. Cowboys empower their DC to weigh in heavily on draftees and some of these guys are Quinn prototypes.
-4 Darts mean good chance of success. I might have traded up and lost at least 1 of these picks but in 3 years the guy I traded away may be the one that hits.

Cons:
-Draft board value seem poor on many of these selections. With a zillion picks no apparent need to reach.
-No Safety or 1T yet though 5 selections.
-No sense of urgency in getting their guy at top of round 2 seemed off given the bevy of picks.
-I'm not sure Chauncey Gholston can make the team and cutting pick 84 would be really poor drafting.

All in all I love the depth of day with 4 selections. But the value seems pretty poor. Fans are going to be screaming about slot CB types but I am fine skipping Molden and Washington on day 2 but I do see some guys go off board right before we picked in round 2 and 3 that I'd have loved the value and fit on. Hoping combo of coaches/scouts were smarter than the draftniks. They have been before but we've also seen the draft classes fall flat at times when they went offbook. Can't wait to see these guys in camp.

This is an excellent post. I really like the 1st 3 picks. I would have probably taken an OL in the Gholston spot. Wright to me is a project but certainly a Dan Quinn Seahawk type corner. And with the exception of McNeil all the 1T guys are all still available.

If nothing else most of the defense has been put on notice. It's obvious they sucked last year and this draft doesn't sugar coat it anymore. I hope we see a handful of tenured guys get whooped in camp and find themselves on the bench.

The self entitled Hotboyz attitude will be gone quickly with competition. I love that.

Way too generous with B-
They are fixated on drafting a CB in the 2nd no matter what and that’s a problem IMO. You need to be flexible in the draft especially when you have so many holes. Joseph is a big risk with his attitude history in TWO programs.
I would have rather them moved up 2-4 spot and took TCU safety whom they liked. They still have enough ammo to trade back into latter half of 2nd for Joseph or another CB.

DT wasn’t too bad.
Ghoston and Wright were reaches. 3 rd rounders are top 100 talents. They should have chance to become starters and not just backups. This reminds me of the Wade Philip draft when we looked for special teasers and backups

I think we can churn some guys on the roster with these picks but I'm curious on the ceiling for the last two.

6'4" corners are rare. Last one I can think of was Sean Smith who was similar height.
Could he be another conversion or is he strictly CB?

So there are rumors that Moehrig may need back surgery His potential back issues are what caused him to fall. And you still wanted to take him ?

Strictly corner. Strictly cover 3 and press man corner as well.

They’ll love him on special teams too I’m sure and I’m almost wondering if they wanted him specifically for that but would never say it.

Brandon browner was a starter for Seattle and Pats and he was 6"4

We had Chris westry a super raw project who was 6"5

I’d give us a C....B+ for first two picks....D- for round 3

This.

We reached a bridge too far yesterday. Almost embarrassing.

The only reason yesterday wasn't an F:

I truly think Golston is a sleeper.

He is a 90's Jimmie Jones/young Jim Jeffcoat type player.

Very solid in run game with great anchor, motor and length. Also brings a quiet violence to his pass rush and thumps.

I like his "pro" motor:

ie: his consistent effort will not be eye popping but he'll be assignment sound and when his matchup takes a down off or is tired he'll capitalize like Jeffcoat.

He will get rotational snaps and take advantage of them.

Rumors?
Anyone else reliable with that news? FO could have easily said we love the kids but medical red flag.
This FO has no issues with Jalen Smith whom no one would touch.

That will be interesting to watch. I think he could play FS in a single high type scheme. He has some safety experience.
He plays better than he tested by far.
For instance there was plenty of screaming for Elijah Molden who has 5 INT in 24 games. Wright had 5 in 16 games.

I saw his brother and their family on Las6t Chance U so am kinda partial/rooting for the kid.

I think you have to grade based partially on haul and this is a good haul even if the value may seem poor on various boards per pick.
Fans and draftniks get caught up in that but you only have so many picks so after about pick 50 you better take the guys you like on your board versus trying ot get cute and let them slip to perceived value.
Not sure they were fixated on a CB so much as they were going to decide between Moehrig and Joseph but had the choice removed.
Joseph has an awesome cool last name... and in all seriousness is an elite talent but he is a character risk.
Can't however say it doesn't feel good to have a guy that flat locked up DeVonta Smith on the squad. And he shut him 100% down including taking a pick.

CB room wirth Diggs, Joseph, AB, Lewis, Wright, Robinson doesn't look so bad any more.

I guess we are going YOLO at safety but drafts not over.

I've seen him compared a lot of Cam Dantzler. 6'2"+ and 188 pound guy the Vikes grabbed last year with terrible RAS score but he started 10 games and graded out very well.

If you want a zone CB you need a different type of athleticism.
Wright is plenty fast, he just isn't agile and he has a really poor bench press but that's proven largely meaningless in the NFL.
What I like is he really plays the ball.
Hard to think of any tall CB since Bobby Taylor who really plays the ball.
Bobby is a Longview Texas guy who was a 6'4" CB and was kidnapped and forced to play in the cesspool that is philly.

I think Gholston makes it because he's probably the fourth-best DT behind Lawrence, Gregory and Basham. The only question there is Anae, who I liked last year but we really haven't seen much as a pro yet.

But with the DTs, especially if we take an NT, it's a pretty crowded position group.

At this point, with what we haven't done at free safety, I am curious if that could be a consideration. He seems to be a willing tackler and with his height and decent speed, he seems like he could fit.

Only thing I'd say is Dallas tried to move up twice only to get outbid. They tried and didn't sell the farm, that is good patience. Overall, looks like a solid defensive draft which we needed with a OT that has good credentials. I'm happy with it. We'll see if McClay Magic holds true. Oh, and c'mon Trysten Hill let's do some thangs!!

I think we all gotta see these actual schemes come camp. Hopefully we actually get some real practices and footage in the next couple months.
