Day 2 Senior Bowl Notes

It was hard to grade the Jordan vs. Tyson matchup because the game got so out of hand so fast. It was 42-0 at halftime, and USC spent most of the 2nd half just running out the clock. I wish there were more meaningfull snaps played to evaluate both players better.

Dang. That was a butt kicking.

Lane Kiffin is a little snake, but that guy had Nick Saban really worried. It's the only time in four matchups with the Vols that Saban was for sure worried. He can coach.

If Kiffin had a kicker in 2009, he would have beaten Alabama. His kicker was 1 out of 4 that day.

Wes Bunting predicted Jordan's rise and Fairley's rise on Vela's site. The 49ers are a major threat to take Jordan and have been paying a whole lot of attention to him. Jordan is for sure going to be in the mix.

Bunting gave Jordan and Smith the same grade. For Dallas, it could come down to Jordan or Smith at 9, and the 49ers or another team might make the choice for Dallas.

The number 1 OT is there for Smith's taking. He could start at RT for Dallas and have Pro Bowl potential as a LT, imo.
Fairley and Jordan have been top picks for sometime. Unless Bunting gave these "predictions" in September then he is stating the obvious. And even in September Jordan was thought to be a first rounder.

Bunting told Vela his projected top 10 a while back. He had this:

2 QBs
2 WRs
4 DL
1 CB
1 OT

I was writing down who he was talking about and came up with these guys:

Cam Newton
Blaine Gabbert
Patrick Peterson
Tyron Smith
Nick Fairley
Da'Quan Bowers
Marcell Dareus
Cameron Jordan

Robert Quinn (remember the off the field issue) I left him out.

If you don't count him, you have a top 10 talent not in the top 10, due to the two QBs. There are 5 teams that need QBs in the top 10. If Newton goes to the Bills or Cardinals, Gabbert will not get past the Titans. They are going to have to draft that need, because their owner is not paying big money to a free agent.

I did 1 mock where Dareus fell to Dallas.

1. Carolina- Fairley
2. Denver- Bowers
3. Buffalo- Newton
4. Detroit- Peterson (defensive head coach/pass on WR Green)
5. Arizona- Quinn
6. Browns- Green
7. S.F. - Jordan
8. Tenn - Gabbert
9. Dallas - Dareus
10 Wash- Jones

In this mock, Tyron Smith is the odd guy out. However, Bunting had Smith in, so he either had Quinn or Jordan out when he told Vela his top 10. Quinn has the off the field issue. If Arizona takes Dareus in this mock, Smith would be Dallas' pick, imo. If Detroit passes on Peterson and takes Green, he will be tempting for the Titans. However, QB is key. I think S.F. would take Jordan over Peterson. However, the Titans need a QB. I know their GM would rather have Peterson, but his hands may be tied. If Arizona takes Gabbert, Peterson will most likely not get past Tennessee unless they take Locker or Mallet.

Who do yall have in the top 10? I gave Jordan to S.F. in that mock.

Two of the safest players in this draft are WRs. Green and Jones. Would Detroit take Green to take the coverage off Johnson? Things that make you go hmm.. I think they will choose between Green and Peterson, and I think Green is the better player. JMO However, they need a CB, and Peterson is the best DB on the board.

If you went back and looked at the mock drafts back in October, Fairley wasn't going in the top 10. Vela started talking to Bunting back in October. Bunting for sure had Cameron Jordan as a potential top 10 pick before the draft sites. Vela was on Jordan at 9 before anyone.

Bunting had Jordan as a top 10 player a good while back. Those players were not considered top 10 picks (by draft gurus) in October and November.

I've been following the mocks, and Jordan wasn't in the top 10 in the fall of the year when Bunting predicted it. Jordan wasn't in the top 10 in December and most of this month, either. Fairley's rise to the top 10 and to 5 was an event that was not set in September. It's Fairley's only big year.

Players that rise this quickly really scare me.

Jordan has been the same guy that he is at the Senior Bowl. He plays at Cal and not many people have seen him. USC is down, and not very many people knew the type of player Smith is at OT . I'm talking about the draft sites. Bunting looked at Smith and stated that he was the best OT in the draft and worthy of a top 10 pick. That will unfold if things go according to Smith's plans., imo.

Both schools are on the West Coast and play late, too.

Cincy has #4. Another team who needs or will need a QB

That is a good point. I didn't list them, because when their GM states that they are not trading you, they really mean it.

You wonder if teams start reaching for Mallett or Locker. Could one of them make it more than 3 QBs. Could the new collective bargaining agreement make those players not such a big risk.

Im fully expecting Jordan to be our pick if this continues, 9 is perfect for the quick rising prospect, but still just a little hesitant to fully love it.

Mayock said tonight he was great today and think he moved himself into the late 1st round.:laugh2:

The sad thing is some fan is going to see that and in April claim he was a huge reach with a Top 15 pick, and that you could have got him probably the 2nd round.

I'm hoping for Tyron Smith or Cameron Jordan.

In free agency, I think Dallas will address the defense, but it will very most likely be defensive line and safety. I think Jerry Jones' comments about the Cowboys CBs points to safety still being the major priority in the secondary. Jones went into some distinct detail (which made a ton of sense) about Dallas' CBs amid his usual pre-draft talk.

I'd do cartwheels if it was Smith. It's long past time to put some blue-chip talent on this offensive line.

I want two Pac Ten guys. It's a miracle.:)

Lol, I think that's just wishful thinking on your part because you think drafting a CB spells the end of T-New.

You should remember around this time last year that Jerry went into detail about how the Cowboys were set at WR and pleased with the development of Hurd and Ogletree.

The next you know we're trading up for Dez Bryant.

What are your thoughts on Cam?

As in Cam'ron the rapper?

He wears too much pink...j/k

I actually like Cam Newton as a prospect. I agree with Mayock in that he's actually more fundamentally sound with his throwing mechanics than Tebow and Vince Young. Every time I watched him at Auburn he made throws I didn't think he would make; surprising touch.

I think the best situation for him is to go to a team that can afford to sit him for a season or two, which may be a team in the late teens or early twenties. I think if he goes Top 10 to a team that wants to start him right away, they may be in for a long season.

If Cam really has the want-to to put in the time and effort to learn and develop, I think he can turn into a playmaking thrower like Ben Roethlisberger. I really believe that.

It's not wishful thinking. Do you like Marc Colombo playing RT?

Would it not be good to get a potential Pro Bowl LT, who can play both sides and start off at RT, where he played at USC.

Do you like Igor Olshansky at DE?

I've stated that drafting Peterson at 9 would likely mean the end of Newman's time in Dallas. I do think it would be a mistake when Newman, I believe, has some good football left in him. The team is hurting up front, on both sides of the football, and Newman is going to buy you some time to fix the mess up front, on offense and defense.

The team is weak up the middle, on both sides of the football. Passing on a top DL or OL is not going to get you back to the top, imo. The good teams build inside/out and that is a fact.

Prince Amukamara has some big question marks, and I don't see him down at the Senior Bowl. Mike Jenkins didn't go to the Senior Bowl, and he fell, too. Only, Mike Jenkins is a 4.38 guy while Amukamara will do good to run in the mid 4.4s and has some issues in his game.

Olshansky is the only DE under contract.

By the way, Jerry Jones defended his comments about the CBs today and stated that Rob Ryan's initial review is positive.

The joke is some at Valley Ranch thinking that Scandrick was the best CB on the roster last year.

We will see about that wishful thinking when the Lions start looking at Tyron Smith. They need a LT bad. Those two pack ten players could go in the top 10, easy.

War is won in the trenches.

Great DL covers up average secondary play. No matter how good a CB is, WR will get open if given time. Allows you to rush just 3 or 4 and drop eveyone else to cover.

Great OL makes average runners look great and give average WRs time to separate and give QB time to go through his progressions.

Fix DL and OL!!!
