We beat up on one of the AFC favorites pretty good last night. I guess I expected people being positive and maybe even becoming more optimistic about our team, but surprisingly there seems to be as much negative talk as there is positive. It is just a preseason game (just like last weeks) but there was definitely more to like than not like IMO.

1) The first team offense had their way. We didnt run the ball great by any means, but it was ok. And we scored easily on two goalline runs (Barber, F Jones) and thats an area we have struggled with for years. (Barber scored easily on a GL run last week too, but it was negated by Kosier penalty) They seemed to be focusing on the shorter passing game and taking what a defense gives, and it worked to near perfection. The pass protection other than maybe one play was excellent. And this was against a very solid, fundamentally sound NFL defense in Tenn.

2) Our starting defense was almost as good, the really positive thing was how well we stopped their run game. The pass rush didnt sack Collins but we did pressure him a couple of times to force errant throws. Olshansky and Brooking look like perfect fits for this defense. Spencer made a couple of nice plays. Spears and Ratliff also were active.

3) On the backups, while I dont in any sense think our guys are steller, the effort was outstanding. Everyone went in assuming our backups would get killed, but our backups dominated their guys. Our backup defense was vastly better than it was vs Oakland last week, and the run defense was solid. Carpenter looks like he will be solid as a nickel LB. Jason Williams was more noticeable last night than against Oakland, and as noted by many this Octavian kid was all over the place. The backup OL held its on and gave both backup QB's good time to throw. And despite missing Austin on a potential big play, Kitna is a VAST upgrade from Brad Johnson. Though some are complaining about McGee I kinda liked what I saw again (even though I lost the feed for awhile due to storms). He's a 4th rd pick coming from a stupid offensive system, so I'm not sure what some expected. But the size and arm strength is there, and he did throw some nice touch passes. In a couple of yrs he could end up being something.

4) Felix Jones and Martellus Bennett are going to be bigtime NFL stars. Jones is the closest thing we've had to Tony Dorsett since his prime. Bennett and Witten are going to cause major matchup nightmares for opposing defenses.

5) Buehler is doing exactly what he was drafted for...some nice bombs on kickoffs...I didnt notice if he played on the punt coverage units or not. I do wonder if he might end up also being a long FG specialist, even though Folk has been outstanding on long FG's. If there's any question about his hip, it might be a smart move.

6) The penalties were disappointing, but not all of them were valid either IMO. If the penalty on the opening kickoff was on Hurd, he didnt do much to warrant a flag. Adams got nailed with a pretty ticky hands to the face call. Tenn's DB's got away with holding and alot of contact all night too.

7) This Ogletree kid is really interesting. He makes very sharp cuts and doesnt run routes at all like an undrafted free agent. Everyone noticed the route on the TD, but the other two catches he made were also from running sharp routes.

8) I cant believe the Jenkins/Scandrick thing is turning into another polarizing argument here. Why cant people be happy that we have both guys? They are both going to be excellent CB's. And people need to stop with the "he only starts because he's a 1st rd pick" non-sense. If that were true why did Spencer not start his first two yrs? Bobby Carpenter? Felix Jones isnt a starter either. If Wade thought Jenkins sucked, he wouldnt be out there. Wade's job is on the line and its extremely doubtful he'd be making personnel decisions on game days that would help get him out of town. That said, I wouldnt be surprised if Scandrick does end up starting, especially if Jenkins struggles some with his ankle. Either way, we're in great shape at CB.

9) Cant say I've been overly impressed with any of the late rd rookie DB's. Mickens seems destined for the PS IMO.

10) Special teams overall were just ok. There were a couple penalties as noted by others, and they did botch the tackle on that long kickoff return. But the kickoff and punt coverage units both still look alot better than last yr, and will probably continue to improve more as they get some continuity with who is out there. McBriar and Buehler are going to be huge for us. McBriar seems to be improved greatly on pinning people inside the 20.

11) Stadium itself is amazing, cant wait till its 100% completed.

12) Hey hats off to my local FOX affiliate, you were the only station last night that I had any HD problem with. Botched almost the entire first half and had sound probs most of the game. Kudos to you.

Overall, I cant see why anyone would have come away from last nights game with much to gripe about, it was a very impressive performance all the way around and other than rookie Brandon Williams knee, it doesnt appear that anyone got hurt, and that ultimately is the #1 goal of preseason, to get out of it healthy.

I gotta disagree on some points.

1) Special teams, Coach Joe needs to get this unit coordinated and fast. Stop with the big plays and the obvious yardage we tend to give up.

2) Offensive line, stop with the penalties at all the wrong times. IE pressure situations like 4 & 1. Im looking at you Columbo.

3) Depth is still a concern on some positions on the team.

I'm encouraged a great deal. I wasn't too worried about last week (even though it was a butt-kicking), but I was hoping we'd have a better showing.

This was supposed to be Tennessee's "dress rehearsal". It may not have been...I don't know. Any time you dominate a team like we did out there, you have to come away impressed.

Great post DBlair and don't disagree with anything.

I totally agree about the Scandrick/Jenkins thing. They are both better then solid, so just let the professional coaches who see them day in and day out make the call. I'm good either way.

Thye've only given up one good return in the two preseason games, and the guys were there in position to make the tackle. Thats a vast difference IMO from the last few yrs when we didnt even have guys coming into the opicture before the retruner got to the 25 or 30 yd line.

2) Offensive line, stop with the penalties at all the wrong times. IE pressure situations like 4 & 1. Im looking at you Columbo.

That was unfortunate, hopefully he doesnt do it when the games count.

3) Depth is still a concern on some positions on the team.

Its that way for all 32 teams, there's really no way to avoid it. There's a few positions where we are in great shape though. There's a few players we absolutely cant afford to lose (Ware, Newman, Ratliff, Gurode, probably Adams, probably R Williams) but everywhere else we could absorb missing a guy here or there, especially if it were only for a game or two.

D, great post and great observations on last night’s game. Also, I agree with this totally, it appears we have a faction of fans that will not be satisfied under any circumstance. If they want to view life through turd vision I guess having a ****ty outlook on the cowboys is their prerogative. Personally, I will continue with my measured optimism.

Edit: I was encouraged from what I saw from Barbie. If he keeps this up he will definetly contribute to the success of the team. Maybe he is finally turning the corner.

This is what we should have been doing for the past 3yrs, but they seemed to have fell in love with the homerun ability of T.O.'s speed to get deep, when T.O.'s best routes are the slants, crossing, outs, ins and comebacks, those are the patterns he built his reputation on, his ability to get deep was icing. I remember T.O. saying when he first got here, that there was at the time 10yrs of tape to see what he does best, but Parcells was stubborn and the guys that came after him, just kept doing what he was doing.
Anyway the offense will click and Romo will go back to being the guy he was before he fell in love with the big plays he and T.O. created.

The ref's missed a pretty obvious holding call on the Titans long kick return. Dont remember who it was, but it definitely helped the return man as it was close to him.

Romos throw to Witten when he was on the move was a thing of beauty. Man i hope they move him around more this year, be it bootlegs or rollouts or whatever, he's just so dangerous when he is on the run.

I agree with ya David... I'm not sure any of the late rnd DB's make the team but that may not necessarily be a bad thing

Good post.

It was good to see some of the second teamers get in there with the first unit. It is easier to evaluate them when there isnt 11 of them on the field at once.

The most impressive thing to me is, it looks like both the offense and defense are holding stuff back. The offense still hasnt unveiled the wild cat or Bennett for that matter and the defense did almost no blitzing.

My only concearn is Tenn and the Raiders dont blitz much, I want to see how the line fairs vs a blitzing team. That seemed to be their biggest achilles last season.

Please someone tell Garrett to ditch "kill kill kill" we all know it is a running play 90% of the time.

Definately a good performance vs a tough physical team. If you dont come away from that game encouraged you never will.

Good post, David.

At one point in the second quarter I remarked in the chat room that Dallas was dominating this team ... maybe not on the scoreboard, but in yards and time of possession. Dallas was doing whatever it wanted ... imposing its will. I loved it. And Tennessee is a good, well-coached, physical team.

The only negatives I saw were the special teams penalties and the injury to Brandon Williams, for whom I have high hopes.

I know Romo missed on a couple of passes, but I think we all forget sometimes how good he is. His release still amazes me, and he's protecting the ball now. He's a great football player.

Depth is a concern for every team in the league. And yeah, I was hacked off at Colombo's bonehead penalty, but that's why we have preseason, to hopefully correct some of that. We shall see.

IMO even though its PRESEASON i think scandrick should start over jenkins...
I mean if it was a decent qb the game would've been a whole lot closer because of him... he keeps getting burnet

The Cowboys looked good last night. I was happy with everything but the ST play. The one thing that struck me was that the Titans didn't really run anything on either side of the ball. Very vanilla. I don't know how much we can take from our performance but I still fill very good about it.

Felix needs more touches on offense period. Puts fear in defenses, has the moves of Dorsett but speed of Hershell Walker. Marty B just plain mismatch for opposing defenses. Loved how deliberate the offense was. Either took what was available or exposed mismatches.

1.) I was surprised to see how ineffective Vince Young was. He looked as if he wasn't on the same page as his receivers.

2.) Very annoyed with the audio problems which lasted almost the entire game. Fox seems to be the only station which has this problem. I don't know if it is a HD thing or what, but it almost ruined the game.:bang2:

:hammer: I am beginning to think he never fully recovered from that hand injury last year until the off season. No accuracy problem last night.
