Usually, I feel somewhat better the day after. Thats not the case today. We had a golden opportunity last night to take early control of the NFC East. Instead, we fell flat on our arses again. The Giants didnt play great last week and were really beaten up coming in, then lost arguably their best defensive player for the entire 2nd half, and still we found a way to lose at home.
1) As I mentioned in another thread last night, Romo is going to soon draw the label of "coach killer" if he doesnt improve his one awful flaw. For those that dont know what the term means, "coach killer" means someone who has tremendous talent and ability, who shows flashes of greatness but over and over reverts to the same flaws that hurt the team. Its also usually a player that has a contract that cant be touched (ie, he's locked up here longterm with a ton of guaranteed money, so he isnt going anywhere). I dont know whats wrong with him, but he is throwing the ball poorly and his trademark accuracy seems to be diminishing more and more with each passing week. He missed a number of easy one's last week, and missed some easy ones again last night. He also seems to be throwing more and more balls that dont spiral. Whatever it is, he has to get over it. He had a horrendous game last night and theres really no excuse for it. Our OL was great and we ran the ball at will, and he just blew it. Those picks he threw were stuff you'd expect rookies to do. The defense will deservedly get some blame, but Romo pretty much lost the game all on his own last night.
2) If I'm Jason Garrett, I'm having the come to Jesus meeting with Romo today. Its way past time. Somebody has to come down on him and good.
3) Defense, what can anyone say that hasnt already been said? Its just atrocious. The tackling is atrocious. The pass rush is basically non existant. The coverage is atrocious. Simply put, Wade's defense is a massive failure. How does a team subtract the two worst players from its secondary and get WORSE? How do you go into a game against a team that you had 12 sacks on in two games last yr, that team starts the exact same 5 guys up front and you hardly touch the QB? I was willing to give them a pass in preseason when we saw no pressure, sacks or turnovers because I believed we were purposely being vanilla. Its obvious now thats not the case.
4) Ken Hamlin is the worst starting safety in football, and it isnt even close. Unfortunately our goober HC thinks he hangs the moon, so nothing is ever said or done to him. After about 20 or so consecutive games in which he just stinks, benching him is WAY overdue. Worst contract Jones has ever given to a player, hands down. Hamlin should be brought up on felony charges for grand larceny.
5) I'm guessing that barring injury, we've seen the last of Orlando Scandrick as a starting CB this yr. Thats about as bad a game as a CB can have. Newman didnt have a good game either, but I did see some good things from Jenkins. Safety play was putrid last night.
6) On a positive note, our OL has been outstanding in run and pass blocking in both games. Adams has two penalties but one he was trying to save the QB and the other he was just over aggressive, otherwise I dont believe we've had any OL penalties. Last nights run blocking was really good to see, albeit the Giants were really short handed up front. I think they said that was our most rushing yards in a game since 1993 last night.
7) Barber is running the ball great, unfortunately his injury looks like it might be something that shuts him down for awhile. Hopefully it isnt season ending or something that will bother him all yr once he does return.
8) Special teams, other than Felix's fumble continue to be outstanding. It's been a long time since we've had punt and kick coverage this solid.
9) What a nightmare for Jones. The team embarrasses itself in the Texas Stadium finale, then has a repeat performance in the opening of the new place in front of an NFL record crowd and with basically a who's who of elite players from the past in attendence.
10) I'm sure he (Jones) wont do it but I'd have Wade clean out his office today. We've all seen enough now. There was only ONE reason to keep this guy, and he has royally flopped as a DC in two games. We rank at or near the bottom of the league in everything on defense, and amazingly have no sacks or turnovers. Yeah yeah yeah, go ahead and give me the "its only one game" crap, we've heard it all before. Wade just isnt getting through to these guys. There's little or no emotion. The tackling is horrible. They take poor angles to the ball carriers or receivers. We arnt winning a championship with Wade, so I'd fire him. At least if they make a change now it MIGHT light a fire under some of the guys. It certainly couldnt be worse. I'd make Garrett HC and promote Herring or Grantham to DC.
11) Hopefully after this season, we say good bye to the 3-4 forever. I hate it, and with few exceptions nobody can convince me we dont have the people to make the switch back.
