Normally I dont feel as bad about losses the next day, but thats not the case today. Games like last night are the one's that always seem to come back and bite you in the *** when it comes to playoff positioning (and yes, I'm still assuming we'll get there)

1) Its only one game, and we were without 2 starting OL. The 5 we put out there last night actually blocked ok IMO, even including Barron (barring the holds). I was pleasantly surprised at the run game success we did have. Assuming Colombo is better than Barron (wouldnt be hard) then we should see further improvement when he and Kosier return. I thought Holland played well, and I know Kosier is better than he is. Free and Gurode played really well I thought.

2) I still think Buehler will be fine as the kicker, but missing your first attempt on a 34 yarder when everyone is wondering "how will the kicker be??" all offseason isnt getting off on the right foot. I suspect he'll get the next two games to show the miss was just one of those things, but if he misses a couple more, he could be back to kickoff only duties after the bye week.

3) I've said in a couple other threads, IMO they game planned offensively extremely scared. Whats funny is the stuff they were doing is what alot of people here clamored for (shorter routes, more screens) and those same people still complained. That said, my biggest problem was they didnt realize soon enough that the stuff they were worried about really wasnt a concern. The intermediate and deep areas between the hashes were open all night, and we hardly looked at it till the 4th qtr. Witten, Bennett and whomever lines up in the slot have got to be more involved in the middle than what we saw last night.

4) Stupid freaking decision before halftime, just no other way to say it. Garrett called a play, but its Wade's job as HC to say "nothing good comes from this, kneel down and lets regroup". That said, Choice still deserves 99% of the blame. He tried to fight for meaningless extra yardage and he fumbled the ball. Its on him.

5) I am reasonably sure they wont do it, but releasing Barron should be the first thing they do today. His blocking wasnt bad for the most part, but you cant let a guy do what he did with 3 holding calls not be held accountable. It sends a bad message to the remainder and intimates that "its ok if I screw up, I'll always have this job"

6) The excessive penalties were one of the most disappointing parts of last nights game. Its gotta be cleaned up (something we've been saying whether the coach was Campo, Parcells or Wade). With that said, it sure seems like officials see virtually EVERYTHING we do, but somehow miss some fairly obvious stuff on the other team. And I guess I'll never understand what constitutes intentional grounding and illegal contact.

7) Bad loss takes away from great game by Austin, several really stupid Dallas writers should be issuing an apology to him and Jones this week for bashing the contract extension. Nice debut for Bryant too. Also liked the fact that Romo has seemingly developed more confidence in RW, who should be celebrating his game winning TD today.

8) Hard to complain about a defensive effort that yields 2 FG's (really 3, Shahanan took 1 off the board) but the blitzes were too stale and easily defeated IMO, and the lack of hits/sacks on the QB and again not forcing any turnovers (save Newman, who was also flagged for a somewhat dubious illegal contact call) is a concern. I went through most of the boxscores, and we ranked down towards the bottom in number of hits on the QB. I really expected more, especially considering McNabb's age and recent ankle injury, along with the Skins having a rebuilt OL and new scheme. We were also credited for a low number of passes defensed. Still, allowing what we allowed should have been more than enough for a W. Also of minor concern to me were the lack of plays made by the safeties. Ball and Sensabaugh basically did nothing good (nor bad, which could be good I guess).

9) The Commanders returned two kickoffs and nearly broke both of them. Gotta clean that up.

10) 15 more games to go, all that matters is beating Chicago though. I dont care if its the ugliest win in team history, they gotta win this game this week, and there's really no excuse to lose. If we do lose, we're clearly staring at 0-3 as Houston on the road is gonna be really tough.

11) Speaking of Houston, they play at Washington Sunday. I bet they hang 30 on them and win by at least two tds. Yeah, I think the Skins are bad. We should have beaten them handily and didnt. Like I said above, normally these are the types of losses that come back to haunt you in terms of playoff positioning.

Nice write up David. A small oasis amongst all the MMQBing!

I totally agree about Houston.

If they get any sort of defensive effort, the Skins will be in trouble.

Honestly, besides the bone head play call at the end of the half, I thought it was well coached game by Garett. He started out w/ the short stuff to protect line and Romo and I liked that, however he has to make adjustments faster. Once we realized the line was playing ok, we should have gotten back to our game of throwing the intermediate stuff.

Skins get a break playing Houston next. They get Houston on the road sandwiched between their two super bowls at home (Indy and Dallas).

Plus they haven't been a good road team and Houston will hear all week how they have finally arrived.

Sometimes it isn't who you play, but when you play them.

Hell man, I just enjoyed the game, even though I had to eat some crow last night being from the DC area. Our defense showed up big time, holding them to just 6 points. Not sure what was called on the TNew INT but that seemed extremely bogus. Dez looked phenomenal and RW looked good as well. I'm excited for this team, they just need to sure up the O-line and we will be good.

I don't really have a problem with the Game Plan. If we don't turn the ball over for 7 at the end of the first half, that game plan has us winning the game 7-6.

Our defense really did play outstanding football with the exception of a brief period right after DWare went down. For a short time, we lost focus but managed to regain. Defensively, you can't ask for much more.

Nice post David.

*Looks at my sig* Did Sean Lee play last night? Did I miss his debut completely? LOL Where was he?

3 mistakes on that play:

1) the decision to not kneel it out after a Barron penalty pushed them back 10yds and just a few ticks on the clock.

2) the decision to toss to Choice; the smart QB move would have been to throw it out of bounds after escaping a sack....you're not Brett Favre. (BTW, it was Doug Free that was beat and put pressure on Romo here)

3) Choice fighting for yards. Know the situation, just go down.

Take back any 1 of those 3 and Dallas possibly wins the game. I know that sometimes games come down to a play here or there, but it came down to this play and not just the play itself but 3 very poor decisions within the play itself by the coaches, the QB and our RB. Choice deserves a third of the blame.

Houston will water down that Blue Kool-Aid into a light shade of gray...LMAO

Its becoming more evident with every post you make.

One thing I failed to point out, while the loss sux half the teams in the leagfue will be 0-1 after tonight, it isnt the end of the world.

More importantly, most of the teams that were expected to be good in the NFC didnt play well either. Minnesota and New Orleans both had sloppy efforts. Green Bay won on the road, but they should have whacked Philly better than that and they could have been in huge trouble if Philly had converted that 4th and 1. NYG won at home over a so-so team, but they looked so-so in doing it. San Fran got absolutely pasted in Seattle and looked FAR worse than we did in doing it. Atlanta looked awful in Pittsburgh and lost to a team QB'd by a 3rd string guy who looked terrible.

I didnt see him on defense any. Did see him on special teams.

Once the offense quit running the fast, short stuff to protect Romo, the more traditional "Romo-esque" offense emerged and played very well.

It was obvious this coaching staff had little confidence in the ability of this version of the O-line to hold up and protect Romo long enough to make some normal plays early on however the circumstances of the game forced the coaching staff to dump that plan and get back to normal and found that they could protect Romo long enough for Romo to do his thing.

In hindsight, this may have been a much different game if the Cowboys had just started with the normal offense and attacked.

A lot of great points David.

I'm really anxious to see how the Cowboys front office handles the Barron issue this week. I suspect most of the decision will be based on Colombo's availability for next Sunday and how much faith they have in Brewster should he need to step in.

Oh, congrats on the 27K.

Thats kind of what I think too. I totally understand why they did it, but maybe they learned something last nght.

Oh, congrats on the 27K.

Listening at the end of last week to the Cowboys' "radio" shows on dc.com there didn't seem to be too much optimism about Colombo's return. If that's the case you cannot afford to cut Barron. At least he's a warm body! I wonder if they go part of the way and start Brewster against Chicago?

I liked it all, but laying it 99% on Choice. I spread that blame to all 4 involved.

Everything else I agree with, adding one thing, I felt the run game was working and with our D playing so well I don't understand not running the ball more. It's one of the best ways to help your Olinemen when it's working and it was effective. Not gashing but effective.
