Day After Thoughts

That's exactly what I was referring to though, in not as many words. I said competitive, not superbowl bound. Getting a good coach is synonymous with changing attitudes, culture, systems. We get that, and we have a chance to not be embarrasing anymore
I'm in complete agreement on that then.

My main contention is that we really aren't close to having a roster that will consistently compete with the NFL's best, even in a watered down NFC. Week in and week out, the Jets, Ravens, Steelers, etc are better teams with better rosters. Not to mention the Saints and the Giants.

The Giants are an interesting team. They appear to be deep all over the place. Unfortunatley, their defense is back on track and their offense is figuring it out. Their OL isn't stellar individually, but as a unit, they're so much better than ours' that it isn't funny.

I think the Cowboys were on track to have a roster like those teams just a few years ago. But the last Parcells' draft was a bust, and those since haven't been great. Dallas really needs someone besides Bryant from the 2010 draft to pan out, and they really need to nail the 2011 draft, what with such a high pick.

You are really off on some of your points. The NFL changes every year, half the playoff teams from the year before don't make it the next year. Saying we can't compete with the Jets, Steelers, Ravens, Saints, Giants is ridiculous when some of those teams didn't even make the playoffs last year and some of those teams we have beaten. This team can compete with those teams and it isn't going to take a long time to do. Those teams you mentioned can be in the very same position the Cowboys are in right now at this time next year. My point is there isn't a lot of separation between most teams in the NFL today.

The Jets just got to this point. They have a terrific roster. They're not going away soon, and in spite of the new coach last year, they've been building this for a few years.

The Steelers and Ravens, etc have their off years, but as a whole, they've been contenders for the better part of a decade or more.

If an off year were all we were experiencing with Dallas, it would be a different story. Sure, we beat the Saints last year, but that's one game. Even when their stars were struggling earlier this year, they kept their heads above water, because they have so much better depth than us.

Unfortunately, what we're seeing with Dallas is a team operating inside a horrible personnel system. Our 10 best players can compete with any any, but after that? James and Brooking starting for a lot of other good teams? Either of our safeties? Anyone on our OL? Anyone on our DL not named Ratliff? Not to mention our STs are tripe. We're going to find that many legitimate NFL players in one offseason? We don't need stars at all those positions, but frankly, we have a huge number of players (Allan Ball, Leonard Davis, and many others) who are nowhere near NFL starting level players.

On a one time basis, Dallas could probably beat just about anyone, especially with Romo. But consistently? No way. The team is thin and getting thinner. 2007 was 3 years ago. Some of those guys are gone, and the other guys are 3 years older, 3 more years of mileage on their bodies. Other than Austin and Bryant, what young players are making a big contribution now who weren't in 2007?

This roster is like a piece of fruit that's slowly rotted on the inside, and we're finally seeing the result of that on the outside of it, namely the field. Romo, and to a lesser degree, others, have covered our numerous deficiencies up and kept us competitive, but this year haven't been able to. I argue that the Cowboys need to start over, let a new regime determine who they want to keep out of this mess and approach it as rebuilding the 3-13 or whatever team it winds up being, instead of trying to cobble together just enough to make a run or two.

6) Suggestion to mods/owner. Anyone who posts "trade so and so" threads, why not move them to a garbage folder somewhere instead of taking up front page space? Trade Tony Romo, Jason Witten and DeMarcus Ware threads? REALLY? *** people. If they wont be moved, then people who crap all over said stupid idea shouldnt be "warned" or given "infractions" People also should cry or complain when people call them out over such stupidity.

What is this Russia circa 1948?

I have a suggestion why don't we create a 'special folder' where only you and the smart Cowboy fans can post.

Problem solved.

I think this is a terrific post and i agree completely.

This has to be looked at as a complete rebuild with expectations tempered accordingly.

If it happens quickly, well thats great, but let a new regime have the opportunity to build a solid NFL foundation.

My greatest fear, as DT mentions above, is an attempt is made to piece meal a winner together thinking that this roster is 'close' to championship quality.

If that means it keeps all the TRADE X FOR Y DO IT threads in one place, i'd be all for that.

This is a great suggestion for the forum, but a horrible one for the staff. Editing posts is always touchy because even if we do it for the good of the forum people will not see it that way. From our perspective sometimes it is better to let people who post dumb things take their lumps than for us to step in. Infractions only happen when lumps get too personal.

Let us unleash the hounds then. Give us a pass for a day or something when these threads pop up.

:D
