Yesterday was a great start to the rest of our season. I have no illusions about making a playoff run as we almost assuredly wont be in it. But yesterday was the most proud I've been of our team in a long, loing time. It brought back memories of 1990 and maybe early 1991, when our team was over-matched on paper but fought hard, made some plays at opportune times and found a way to win. Now I am not saying Jason Garrett is Jimmy Johnson, but I am saying there was a similar "feel" to how yesterday played out.

1) What a difference coaching and leadership make in the NFL. Garrett got these guys to buy into something in 3-4 days. These same guys who were coddled to death and had to prove nothing to the prior HC all bought in, worked hard and gave great effort. And they did it without the pro bowl QB, basically without both starting CB's and a hodgepodge DL. There werent the stupid penalties, the masses of missed tackles, mind boggling penalties and the drive killing drops or tipped balls that led to easy picks. Imagine what he can do over the course of the next 7 weeks.

2) I dont want to get too carried away about one game, and I do think the Giants were looking past us somewhat. (I think they play Philly next week). Who could blame them if they did? That said, I never envisioned us actually winning the game. I would have been more than happy with better effort and just keeping the score respectable. I saw yesterday as the LEAST winnable game of any remaining on the schedule. In all liklihood we wont win out, and the injuries are really mounting. But there's not a team left on the schedule they cant beat if they are relatively healthy and continue to maximize the effort. Coaching DOES matter.

3) Here we are not even 24 hours after a great road win in Garrett's debut, and yet there's still negative thread after negative thread. I guess I shouldnt be surprised. "The defense sucked", "[insert player name] sucked", "Garrett sabotaged Wade just to get the job", "A [insert play call] sucked", "We should be losing on purpose to get the higher pick!!!", "Jones the GM sux!!!!" BLAH BLAH BLAH. Seriously, after such a nightmare first 8 games, cant some of you just be happy we won a damn game? And it wasnt a win in some flukey fashion, we played a great game against arguably the best team in the NFC, on the road.

4) Defensively, yeah we gave up a ton of yards. But the Giants offense has been rolling the past 4-6 weeks. The pass rush isnt where it needs to be, but other than a couple games Manning has hardly been touched this yr. (12 sacks overall). People forget though they had been averaging 36 pts per game the past 4 and had back to back games with 41 pts. Manning had 12 tds alone in the last 4 games. I think anyone that thought we were going to come out and suffocate their offense were more than just wishful thinking. Pasqualoni may or may not end up a good DC here and in all liklihood wont be the DC here next yr even if Garrett does get the HC job permanently, but we should cut him a little slack for now. Our DL is really hurting and for a significant portion of the game yesterday we were missing our two best CB's. For alot of the game we had a rookie free agent and a late rd pick playing the 1-2 CB spots. What should be praised though is the great job they did of run defense and the fact that they did make 4 huge plays in key situations (McCann pick, Butler strip on bad snap, James 4th down stuff and Ball's game sealing pick). We have not been making those kinds of plays this year.

5) Great game for Jon Kitna. Hopefully last week in GB was an aberration. He threw the ball great yesterday and even made a few plays with his feet. For the role he was acquired for, he's pretty good at it.

6) Jones and Barber ran hard and Jones's long td via the screen pass was a thing of beauty. I'm surprised Choice got no carries, in fact I'm not even sure he played. But as long as Jones and Barber run the way they did yesterday, it isnt an issue.

7) OL deserves some credit for a change, very solid effort. The Giants had been hitting QB's left and right for most of the season, and yet they hardly touched Kitna. They did just enough in the run game to keep the Giants off balance and we didnt have the multitude of negative rushing plays on 1st or 2nd down that would put us into really bad situations.

8) Dez Bryant just continues to amaze. This kid is such a winner and his talent is just awe inspiring. Numerous teams have to be kicking themselves over passing on this guy. Glad we have him. You love to hate Jerry the GM for just about everything that goes wrong, then give him some credit for this.

9) Alan Ball, worst starting FS in football for the first half of the year. FINALLY made a play, and it was a great read. He finally attacked the ball in the air. He still isnt much of a tackler, but if he can make a few plays like that one it will help make up for some of the shortcomings. I think alot of us thought we'd be seeing plays like that routinely. Maybe he will start coming around.

10) Other than the injury to Jenkins (who got injured giving great effort, and even forced a fumble on another play by making a text book hit) the only negative to the game yesterday IMO was Buehler missing from 34yds and kinda struggling with the kickoffs. It will be interesting to see what happens with him the remainder of the year. He might get the next two games without any competition, but I suspect if he misses another gimmee we will see some potential new kickers brought in after the New Orleans game for try outs.

Love Garrett's attitude about the win, its only one game and I think he wont let them get caught up in it and get complacent about it. As some others have alluded to, the Detroit game will be very interesting to see if Garrett does get the message through, that the Giants game was only ONE week. With the prior HC, I dont know that this would happen.

I'm excited about the rest of this year. As I mentioned above, it kinda has that early Jimmy Johnson years feel to it now to me. Only right now, this team has more talent than he did in 1990 and maybe even 1991.

Good summary. Pretty much sums up how I feel.

Thanks you!

Great post, top to bottom.

Things I noticed that I had not seen so far this year is players trying to rip the ball out of the players hands, I saw at least three instances of it this past game.

The defense may have given up a few yards, but I saw alot of things last night that still gives me hope that there IS talent on this team and that they are not a 1-7 team talent wise.

The think the cornerstone play that showed that this is a different team is when Bradshaw was fighting for a touchdown, and our guys swarmed the ball and stopped him short on the 2 yard line, which I think led to the pick-6.

A week ago, Bradshaw would have waltzed in, or carried two defenders with him to 6 points. This week, we laid the wood on him.

Another key memory: around the 3rd quarter, they showed Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw sitting on the bench on the sidelines...they both had that "we're getting the wood put to us" looks on their faces. Priceless.

Good stuff.

I agree with much of it.

To be honest, I'm am shocked at how different that team looked yesterday.

Had they even gotten to a lead like they did, Dallas would have folded yesterday right after the Giants' quick score in the 3rd if Wade was around.

I think Troy said it best.

He was talking about how all the changes were being made and he said when you heard of them you couldn't help but wonder why they weren't doing all that stuff from the beginning.

.

I noticed far more gang tackling yesterday than in recent weeks. Not as much oen guy trying to arm tackle. They had several guys running to the ball.

It was much crisper. Still wasnt perfect but it was far better.

Agree with everything...Especially perplexed by the negative threads...We won the game and you couldn't even tell by the board's reaction. Just business as usual round here, I suppose.

I've been a hge Garrett critic but I desperately want to proven wrong about him. One game and I'm becoming a believer.

I think becoming the HC was the best thing that could happen for his playcalling. Now that he has to be mindful of both sides of the ball, and special teams as well, I think he's a little less careless on offense. You saw alot less shotgun, a lot more simple running plays to get a couple yards and make it easier on 3rd down, and a lot more conservative playcalling (ie, towards the end of the game). Really liked what I saw from the head coach yesterday. He's got these guys believing in themselves.

Really makes you wonder what Wade actually DID here for 4 years.

This game just proves that Wade was in fact a complete freakin Buttermilk Buffoon and a huge waste of time.

He was good. Reminds me a little of how Jeff Garcia came off the bench a few years ago for an injured McNabb and led the Eagles to a pretty successful year overall.

the most important thing about the game yesterday? the players gave effort. I wouldn't have cared if we lost as long as they showed the same passion as they did in the game.

yes, the Giants were overlooking us since they played us two weeks ago and just walked all over us. garrett had these guys focused. he also sent a message with his game plan of we are going to attack them and punch them and give it our best shot. they attacked down field. the OL was able to give Kitna time and they punched the Giant (pun intended).

The defense flew to the ball much better today. Much better is a bad description, I guess, since they haven't done it at all this season.

They got the kind of plays - like McCann's interception - that they haven't gotten all season. Still, it shouldn't go unnoticed that the D got pretty much whipped otherwise. There's a lot of work - and personnel - that will need to go into that side of the ball.

It's nice to see them play well. Some things I'd like to see from here til the end of the season would be to see Ware and Ratliff get back on track, and to see Sean Lee take over at ILB.

I thought the key to this win was the O-Line playing well for a change. That allowed Kitna the time to throw and Bryant was amazing with some of his catches. He has definitely moved Roy Williams to the backup role.

The offense looked good overall and put up 427 yards and 26 points against a very tough defense.

Our defense made a couple of key stops and the 101-yard TD return by McCann was just a thrill to see for a change. I kept expecting to see a flag calling back so my joy was tempered for a bit until we kicked the XP.

Still, ZERO sacks and 480 yards is not a good performance by our defense which has seriously underperformed for most of the year and seems to be declining. We played the run better which was nice and Bradie James' stop on 4th down was an outstanding play for us but our pass defense continues to suck.

I attribute that mostly to Dave Campo who should have been canned along with Wade Philips. He should never have been brought back in the first place and should be working at some fast-food place and not in the NFL.

We did create 3 turnovers and only had 5 penalties but they controlled the clock for an entire quarter more than us and moved the ball pretty easily on for most of the game. 2 INTs inside the 5 stopped them from scoring more points but that doesn't change the fact they they moved into scoring position way too easily on us.

All in all a very good win over a division rival and it was nice to feel good on a Sunday evening for a change.

Being 2-7 will do that to you. When we win a few more games things will start to change with the board.

On that play Jenkins got hurt on, he hesitated for like half a second before sticking his head in the pile, but you could see him thinking "I can't not try to make this tackle".

Good enough for me.

Everlastingxxx;3699184No thoughts on Buehler?
