Day After Thoughts

good post dbair

Not sure why people are getting on newman either, he is out there playing injured and on that first play vick had over 5 seconds to throw the ball. How much can newman do?

Missing dez last night was a glaring loss. Ogletree was awful returning kicks. I actually think his mistake bringing the ball out of the endzone when we were up 20-17 is what swung the game back to philly. He was 7 yards deep in the endzone and drifting back when he caught the ball. It was a major mistake coming out. It screwed everything up.

Other mental mistakes that cost were roy williams running some pretty bad routes, he should have made that catch on the 3 yard line on an outstanding throw from kitna. He just ran a really bad route, then the interception he was a mess.

again, the choice thing was just about as poor as it gets. There were about 100 or so former players, I can only imagine how disgusted cliff and charlie, roger and randy white were. I heard drew pearson talking about it on tv last night and he thought it was disgusting.

I would also like to add, the eagles are always classless and last night was one of their poorest showings. People that defend Andy Reid and talk about how great he is are just shills, like broaddus. The eagles players were doing some of the most bush league things. Karma is a female dog.

I will go on record as saying that team isnt going anywhere, when the giants get healthy I think they beat them and win the division and reids offense will screw something up on the road in the playoffs like it always does.

I think so too. Their biggest failing is that they are a soft, whiny group of girls. When they play a team that can both run the ball and hit Vick occasionally, they're gonna fold just like they did last year.

I think the Giants whoop them.

Great to see you back, theebs. I agree on Newman - ingrates around here that don't know coverages will think it was his fault, but it was Cover 2. Newman's supposed to bump him and pass him off up the sideline. The fact that he was able to turn and burn to make the tackle is pretty impressive.

Also, the game wasn't won 7-0 with that one long catch and Eagles TD...there are other problems. Just like Dave said, I completely agree and have noticed it for a few weeks now: this team misses Marcus Spears. We need to have him back next year, and hopefully we'll do the right thing and keep him. Olshansky, however, can take a hike.

With the exception of No. 7, you knocked that one out the park.

By the way, welcome back!

To me, this season has screamed that Dallas needs to look for a stand-out Safety. Having two jags back there is just killing this team. As a whole, the D has allowed points at an alarming pace. It is amazing that there has been so little change in the personnel from last season (second in points allowed) to this one.

Just remember folks, it's not the greatest idea to compare what this team is now vs the all-time terribleness it was for a few weeks preceeding Wade's ouster. This team certainly does not resmble that pathetic group, but it also does not resemple the team (also cached by the mostly the same group) that went 11-5 and smoked the Eagles multiple times last year. This team is not as good as that team.

Compared to earlier this year, yes, I'm fairly happy with the performance. But if you told any of us at the beginning fo the year that we would lose at home to Philly and our defense would be dominated like that, admit it, none of us would have been happy.

The point is, I like Garrett, but he is being compared to a very low bar of the first half of this season.
So far. I'm very happy with the progress, but wish to keep it in perspective.

Good point. Garrett has been doing a good job so far and I certainly think he has potential, but I would still like for Jerry Jones go through all of his options this offseason. If Garrett is the best candidate, then so be it.

How do you get tackeld on the 8 on a kick return? And make it to the 20 after a a 15 yard taunting penalty pushed them back?

These things are hard feats to pull off

I continue to be amazed by the reactions of this place. I'm not sure what some people expected. We all want to see a win every game. But you geniuses post thread after thread about how 95% of the players are garbage, the coaches are garbage and the owner is garbage, then are genuinely surprised we dont win a game. I bet if we had a poll of every eligible person this forum before the game, at least 2/3 would have said we were going to lose the game. Alot of those people probably would have said we'd get run off the field.

At 1-7 this team was an utter disgrace, arguably the biggest trainwreck in franchise history. We could EASILY be 5-0 under Jason Garrett right now, and we've done that despite using a 38yr old backup QB for everyone of those snaps. The two losses we do have were by 3pts each to argubly the two best teams in the conference.

1) I'm 110% sold on Garrett as HC, and I hope Jones is too. This doesnt even remotely resemble the team we saw under Wade and I have no doubt in my mind that if had been the coach since day one this yr that we'd probably be in first place even with Romo's injury. I'm really excited to see what he does in terms of his staff once the season is over. I suspect a massive overhaul is coming, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

2) The run defense had been really good since Garrett took over, and for the first two and half quarters of last night it was outstanding too. Then McCoy popped that long run. Not sure what happened on the final drive, but the run defense failed at that point. Part of the issue is most teams would play 8 or 9 men up in that situation, but our 8th and 9th guys are Sensabaugh and Ball, who are awful in run support. I think last night was the first time we REALLY missed Marcus Spears, who despite the constant hate on this forum IS the best DE on the team. He's a better player than most of you give him credit for, and its easy to see why Wade and the defensive coaches kept him in the starting lineup. I'd like to see us keep him if possible. Olshansky can go away.

3) I see alot of railing away on T New. I guess I shouldnt be surprised, since he gave up a big play on the first play of the game. But that was pretty much it. Jackson had 4 catches for 210 yds, and 91 was on that catch & run when Jenkins just missed the defelection. One of Jackson's other big playss came when Sensabaugh blew a coverage on Jenkins side of the field. Other than that, the Eagles had a TOTAL of 12 catches for 60 yards.

4) Really saw the effect of losing Dez Bryant on punt and kickoff returns last night. McCann and Ogletree were both pretty bad. The Eagles also caught a big break by not having to play against him on defense. They doubled Austin all night long. They even doubled Roy Williams some. Thats why you saw so many throws to Witten and Bennett.

5) For those crying for more long passes, the few attempts Kitna did throw down the field should be further proof of why we arnt seeing it more. Bennett was wide open for what would have been an easy score (wouldnt have counted anyway, as they flagged Gurode) but Kitna underthrew him. He also threw a couple others that had no chance. That said, I think the coverages dictated alot more of where the passes were thrown than anything else. I rarely saw Philly put 8 men in the box, and alot of times they seemed to be stopping our run with just 6 guys up. They were constantly running LB's out into space downfield.

6) I really think sticking with Buehler is gonna pay off for us down the road. He's kicking really well. He's 18/24 now, and is actually 3/4 over 50+, the one miss being that 59 bomb that he just missed on.

7) I dont see the need to say much more about what Choice did. The people that are in love with him see nothing wrong with what he did, but it was a bush league move and might ultimately be his ticket out of here. I've never seen that done in 25 years of watching football. I think Jimmy might have cut the guy immediately if he was here.

8) The run blocking just has to be a priority in the offseason. Its not as bad as it was the first 8 weeks (nothing is) but its still not good enough. I suspect we'll see 2 new starters on the OL for sure, and 3's a possibility.

9) I guess Bob Sturm was the only one who agreed with me, but DeMarcus Ware was really good last night. He was all over and laid some big hits on guys when he got the chance. I thought Newman and Jenkins were both alot better than what people on here gave credit for. Spencer seemed a little more active to me. Bradie James was pretty good for most of the game too. I thought Scandrick had another pretty good game too. He's definitely a different player since Wade was let go.

10) Jesse Holley was credited for 5 special teams tackles last night. Now I'm not a ST stat guru, but I'd tend to think 5 in one game is alot for one guy. He blew the block on the punt block TD last week, but otherwise he has been pretty good at what they brought him up for.

The bottom line for me is we are seeing dramatic improvement. Not having Romo is a massive handicap for us and we're still playing solid offense and have had a legit chance to win every game since Garrett took over. Wtih an offseason to make staff changes and some personnel tweaks, I have little doubt we can be really good next yr.
Terrific post. Agree with everything stated. I'm not as down on Choice for what he did - i mentioned in the Choice thread that Torry Holt did something similar with T.O. when we played the Rams in 2007 - but can certainly see the point of those that are angry with him. He could have sent a clubhouse guy to get Vick's autograph after the game or met Vick at the Eagles team bus.

Anyway, thought the op was right on with last night's game and the direction this team is headed under RJ.

Good stuff, dbair. I'm on record agreeing with almost every take you took, with the exception of the Choice take. And, for the record on that one, I'm hardly in love with Tashard Choice, so it's not the case that everyone who disagrees with you on that point is on the guy's jock.

I'm 100% in agreement with the OP.
All want to win,no question about it,but hey,we now have a competitive team that exchanged blows with the division leaders.
If you "demand" wins, then watching football may not be the sport for you.Demand effort and the wins will eventually come.
We saw effort last night, the outcome was not what we wanted, live with it.

Agree with most of what you said except for this :

"This doesnt even remotely resemble the team we saw under Wade"

I dont know , the swiss cheese defense is continuing.

When people are mad they tend to overreact. Thats all it is.

I didn't even read all of the original post. All I'll say is that I did expect for us to lose last night. Not because the Eagles are some powerhouse, but because we are just terrible. What really chaps my a** is the fact that we continue to find miraculous ways to lose. How many times have you seen a 91 yard touchdown pass? And then immediately after, we throw an interception. It's just been one debacle after another.

As far as Garrett is concerned, I am not sold on him at all. I don't think he is bad or will fail as a head coach for some other team. This team needs fresh faces in here to coach them. There are better options out there that can come in here and get this team on the right track.

Agreed with all Dbair. I refrain from even posting after games because of all the knee jerk emotion.

We nearly beat arguably the best team in the conference with a 38 year old backup QB, Dez out, a paper mache offensive line, and a dilapitated secondary. That speaks volumes about Jason.

Before Jason took over and after the Green Bay debacle I could see the problems we had objectively, and I said if Jason went 4-4 then he had earned his job. He's now 3-2 and we're more than competitive in all of our games.

I'm true to my word and just because some time has gone by, doesn't mean i forgot the mindset that I had when I made the 4-4 statement.

If Jason pulls out another win there's no doubt he deserves a legitimate shot next season. Sign him to a 1 year contract and let's see what he's got with a full offseason and training camp.
