This is what ESPN's Todd McShay had to say:
That ranking was shown to be completely out of whack. I believe it was an outdated ranking from past years or something, so there's no sense using it to somehow discredit McShay.BigWillie;1411968 said:McShay is also part of Scouts Inc., the same group that had Newman rated as the 21st best CB in football.
IIRC, McShay also said Adam Carriker was unimpressive for the early part of the week in Senior Bowl practices, while you could watch him consistently tearing apart offensive lineman.
If you watched the practices, Hughes was consistently laying 8-10 yards off his man and would NOT press at all. The WR's would simply break off slant routes he could not get to at all. You could look at someone as small as Josh Wilson who would press the WR's all day, and would not get beat. Hughes was so scared of getting beat deep, it was almost funny to watch.

Steve Muench said:A few weeks ago, this column discussed California CB Daymeion Hughes' strong performance at the Senior Bowl and how he showed better-than-expected man-to-man cover skills. In fact, it looked like he might have the skills to develop into a shut-down corner. However, a little more than a month later Hughes ran a pedestrian 4.65 in the 40 at the combine. Make no mistake, Hughes still has the toughness, instincts and big-play flair to start in the NFL. He made that clear during the season and at the Senior Bowl. The difference now, though, is that it's clear he's vulnerable to getting beat deep when left on an island, and he might be best suited to play in a Cover 2 scheme.
Football speed is certainly different than track speed. Guys like Jerry Rice have proven that. But you can bet Hughes' 40 time sent scouts back to the videotape to try to determine whether he truly does have NFL-caliber game speed. If they determine he doesn't, they can thank the combine for bringing that to light. It's just one part in the process, but it can be a very valuable part when you're talking about a first-round draft slot.
I'm on board with that. He will one of those you really don't know if you should pull the trigger or not. With me it depends on what we do at 22.theogt;1411067 said:This guy would be an absolute steal in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Pardon me for not giving a flip about the impression you got when you watched a 5 second clip on NFL Network.BigWillie;1412477 said:Again I say, if you watched him during Senior Bowl practices, you would see a man scared to get beat. How they got Hughes was good in man-to-man coverage is beyond outrageous to me. Continuously, Hughes played 8-10 yards off, so how could they get a feel for how Hughes did in man coverage?
It isn't like I was watching anything different than they were. The drills were shown on TV. It's just outrageous to say he was one of the better CB's there. Honestly, it's almost absurd, IMO.
From what I've seen, not much was shown -- and certainly everything was not shown. I've got all of the coverage from NFL Network downloading so I'll give it a look.BigWillie;1412492 said:Um, theogt, the entire hour and a half practices were shown all week. Each drill was shown. Pretty much everything was shown.
Just got through the 1 on 1 drills from Monday and he didn't play any further off the receiver than any other DB. I suspect there won't be any difference during the other drills and during the subsequent practices.BigWillie;1412513 said:Not much was shown?
You certainly need to get the NFL Network around the time of the Senior Bowl and watch yourself.
From the stretching to the end when they went offense vs. defense was shown. Heck, it was shown live with the North practices at 10:30 every morning.
But you download those practices and judge for yourself, instead of judging based off something you have not even seen.
