I was looking at our roster and was struck by the numbers of guys we have coming into camp, 17 (or 18 depending on how you view Neal). Many of which are what we perceive to be, at least some what, quality guys.

Brown, Burton, Candy, Diggs, Goodwin, Joseph, Lewis, Mucuamu, Robinson II, Wright, Robinson, Kearse, Kazee, Wilson, Thompson, Parker and Coyle. (Neal)

I see a lot of battles shaping up. For starting spots and just for a job.
Can Joseph take the starting outside CB spot away from Brown and Candy? Will Wright push them all?
Will Mucuamu push Thompson out the door at FS?
Will Robinson II get a shot and make the jump?
Can Coyle take Kearses' job and be the back up to Wilson?
*Neal is the wild card, I just can't seem to find a place for him, but I know he'll have one.

I think they will probably carry 12 DB's, I bolded the 9 players I see as probable locks on the team. I put the 4 players I see as probable's in italic.
List who you think makes the 53. Also who you think starts and where.

My list goes like this:

Diggs starting outside CB
Joseph starting outside CB
Wright starting nickel/back up outside CB/ST
Candy back up CB
Brown starting slot CB
Lewis back up slot CB

Wilson starting SS
Kearse back up SS
Kazee starting FS
*Neal back up S/LB
Mucuamu back up FS/CB/ST
Robinson II back up S/CB/ST
Coyle back S/ST

How does one get enough practice and preseason game reps to evaluate? Sometimes very difficult.

How does one sneak a few onto the practice squad? A player can flash for a little and catch the eye of another team. Show too much and the player can get poached.

Need to identify early which players might just need a little more time to develop. Need to identify which players have something.

Need to identify the progress stoppers. Are they worth keeping?

12 is too many, .that's more than the trench men per OL and DL

I highly doubt we keep that many DBs
someone is getting cut, someone is headed towards the practice squad, someone is getting traded, but someone is not gonna be on this 53 roster.
.
Dunno if Reggie Robinson Jr. would be eligible. for PS.
i assume he attended the rookie minicamp, but if he did, i heard no reviews or reports from him.
CJ Goodwin is our best special teams player, so he's a likelihood.

i would think if Lewis is converting to FS it would be announced by now, but by training camp we'll know for sure.
Would be senseless to re-sign him to that $$ to compete with 4th and 5th CB role (vs Wright, Brown)
I've placed Neal in the LB unit.
Camp-preseason will have to play it all out but this is what i came up with:

1) Diggs
2) Joseph
3) Wright
4) Wilson
5) Kazee
6) Brown
7) Lewis
8) Goodwin
9) Mucuamu/Kearse/Thompson (battle for last DB spot)

Maybe outside chance of possible10 DB, but no more than that - and i don't have Robinson, nor Cannaday making the 53 man team.

Every team has those same concerns.

Yeah, some more than others. Some at one position, others at other positions.

Cowboys have that concern at DB and WR this year especially.

I don't see the issue at WR but DB yes and it will be important for many of these younger players to make a name on special teams. Guys will go to camp and the ball is in their court to show what they can do. Clearly guys who get drafted late or UDFA tend not to get as many reps so they must make the most of the reps they get.

Hard part is getting them on the court. Too few reps with too many players to choose from can be a huge problem. Not a bad problem to have, much better than too few numbers at a position. Just need to guess right.

The final 2 WR spots will be very competitive. Wilson, Brown, Smith, Mitchell, Vasher, Eagles, and Fehoko. Need reps for the starters Cooper, Lamb, and Gallup to develop timing and get a good feel and also test the DBs with the top talent to see where they stand.

A lot of players to evaluate on the DL too this year.

Competition for roster spots is a good thing. The Cowboys have been lacking that on the defensive side of the ball lately,
As long as it is true competition, not the Jones boys deciding who they want to keep and start over the coaches wishes.

I don’t see this because I don’t get how a new 3rd Rd doesn’t get a shot but who knows

I think you have to add Goodwin to the mix somewhere. I think they just re-signed him, didn’t they? I’d replace Canady with Goodwin.

I'm sorry you cannot put Thompson out there on defense for even one more snap. Between Kearse and the rookies, it should not be too hard to replace him.

You also forgot about Goodwin who definitely will make the roster as STs ace.

I dont think its that complicated. Not really concerned with who wins backup roles. Starters is what matters. Dont see Wright unseating our two Brown or our slot corner. As much as I would like it a rookie 3rd rounder that made a few plays in rookie camp doesnt win you a starting nod.

I'm kind of confused by the whole bunch...Goodwin might have his spot solidified thanks to Bones Fassel.

The thing that's confusing me most is they have resources put into Lewis....so if i'm to believe Lewis starts then that makes things difficult to predict.

Wright would have to completely bomb to get cut as a 3rd rounder.
I mean he'd make practice squad but someone would claim him. It would be like Michael Jackson who we drafted not too long ago. But yeah I have a hard time seeing it. You liked him enough to draft him but a few months later you want to cut him? Seems highly unlikely. I'd even say the same about Reggie Robinson. You like him enough to draft him in the 4th last year.....seems like you should still like him at least enough to let him snag that last spot. For these two guys to be the ones fighting for a spot I need to see who the hell they have making the team at corner to begin with.

The re-signing of both Brown and then Lewis are confusing to me. Paying free agent money to two slot corner candidates. And now, roster numbers get tight as a result.

Right.

I don't know if Lewis was insurance or what..I like what Lewis CAN bring hopefully under a new coach. I don't even know how they feel about Canady....if they want to go into camp and may the best man win then i'm all for it...but its interesting they didnt' want to do that with Antwan Woods with the defensive line.

I mean most of the players are here because the Jones boys wanted them so I don't think you can escape this lol.
