After 2 Losses in 2016, Are The Cowboys Ready To Beat the Giants?

Thursday, July 13, 2017 3:18 PM CDT
By DallasCowboys.com Report

The offseason practices are in the rearview mirror as the Cowboys are heading towards training camp, which begins on July 24 in Oxnard, Calif.

That’s usually the place where many of the questions regarding this team start to get answered.

The staff writers at DallasCowboys.com – Rob Phillips, David Helman, Nick Eatman and Bryan Broaddus – are attempting to answer 20 pressing questions as the team gets ready for camp and the 2017 season.

Today, we continue the series discussing how the Cowboys can stop a two-game drought against their division rivals, the New York Giants, dating back to last season.

Read

Eatman: From the guy who said the Cowboys would beat the Giants by 21 points if they had met again in last year’s playoffs, of course, I’ll say yes to that answer. The Cowboys and Giants have a tricky rivalry. It’s probably no different than any of the other division rivalries. But it really doesn’t matter how good one team is over the other, they will play it down to the wire, regardless of the records. So yes, the Cowboys can beat the Giants. Yes, the Giants can beat the Cowboys. It’s easy to look at the three losses in the regular season and point to one team that is responsible for 66.6 percent of them. However, those games were both very close and the ball could’ve bounced a little differently in each one. I think the Cowboys still have to figure out a plan for Odell Beckham Jr. and now with Brandon Marshall in the mix, it might be even tougher. But I expect the Cowboys to have a better offensive plan in place and that might be just enough to push them over the edge.

Helman: There might not be a worse matchup on this year’s schedule than New York, as last year’s results can attest. High-octane opponents like Atlanta, Green Bay, Oakland and Washington have questions on defense. Nasty defenses like Denver and Kansas City have questions on offense. The Giants might have the best combination of everything. Their defense is disgusting, with an elite secondary and one of the best defensive lines in the game. They have an experienced quarterback, a dynamic receiver corps and they just drafted a potential difference-maker at tight end. The only thing holding the Giants back is probably a leaky offensive line, which they didn’t do much to address. If the Cowboys are going to get a win against their divisional rival this year, I think their defensive front is going to have to be much improved to help limit Eli Manning and the New York offense. I think the Cowboys have what it takes to get at least one win against the Giants this time around. I’d honestly be pretty surprised if either team sweeps the season series, though.

Last year was all on Linehan, for whatever reason he decided to run his base offense against those clowns.. The giants have figured out his base offense, they play up, play on their toes and attack..

If we attack with 4 wide's, run the counters, let Dak roll out. In other words unleash the kids, they're toast!

I hope we do beat the Giants but winning overall is what matters most to me. If today someone told me Dallas would repeat the reg season and go 13-3 but 2 of the 3 loses would be to NY I would gladly take that right now.
I understand the sentiment of what your saying, but I don't think I'd take it, because knowing the outcome would take all the fun out of actually watching it happen.

Its going to be harder for Dallas because we re going to have to rely on the team to compensate for Garrett. Its sad but true. Where McAdoo has clearly shown he can outcoach Garrett already, Pederson hasnt shown anything yet, and who knows the X factor Gruden will be, but each of the teams in the NFCE has fairly good teams that they can all hang with Dallas as of right now. Where Dallas should be dominant, we just cant get over that hump and make us continously dominant and we dont have a coach who can keep us in position to be that way, we we re going to require a lot more out of star players to keep points on the board. If not, we re coming back down yet again.

The Giants taylor made their defense to counter the Cowboys offense.

i dont know if thats really the case, if anyone has followed the Giants Dallas rivalry its never about the team, its playing it to the best and standing up that particular game day. I have seen bad giant teams beat good dallas teams and bad dallas team beat good giant teams. You know last year, their offensive line was to be a problem, I saw no problem from that line while they beat on Dallas. Giants always seem to field a good team regardless. They just play better like we do for our games.

Hmm. Vernon's pass rush being cited? IIRC, in the second game Tyron dominated him on the passing downs. Vernon's being a beast against the run was the issue

4-2 is probably worse record for division winner.

To beat Giants, Cowboys have to pummel and wear out Gints' D, keep on field on long scoring drives. Zeke has to be the focus, in running as well as passing game.

And Cowboys MUST upgrade their front 4 to take advantage of that poor OL. Cowboys DL did not do enough in either game, Eli was too comfortable, especially late in the game.

About five seasons ago, I had the feeling that the 'rooks' would early on in their careers, take a business approach rather than own up to having to make a play for success.

Now, I think that Jason and his staff have raised a bunch of scrappers who expect to be tested during the game...but they will instead, bruise ya' now.

There's an air of payment due now...for the Giants.
