Dunbar_120213_650.jpg

IRVING, Texas - As the Cowboys come back from the Thanksgiving Day break, this is the time of year when things start to heat up. With four games left on the schedule, the Cowboys are 7-5 with a legitimate shot to make the playoffs as they remain tied for first in the NFC East.

Football analyst Bryan Broaddus answers a few pressing questions about the current state of the Cowboys.

1. How much will Lance Dunbar’s injury affect the offense? Do they have anyone to replace that added dimension?

Broaddus:
The loss of Dunbar takes away the ability for this offense to have that player that can make those loose plays in the open field. He just brought a different dynamic for the pace in which he played. With Murray it’s a steady pounding and you get use to that style on defense, then all of the sudden, you had the ball to Dunbar and he is into the second level in a flash. What is a shame is that they didn’t use him more this season in that role. Coaches will tell you that injuries and ball security were reasons but he is just such a different type of back when you can get him rolling. Those loose plays are going to have to come fromCole Beasley in the passing game because as they are set up now, they don’t have a Lance Dunbar type of back on this roster.

2. How would you assess Tyron Smith’s play at left tackle lately?

Losing Dunbar sucks but why is he talking like Dunbar has been some horse for this team? Hes had one good game other than that hes probably had about 15 carries all year. I think that the Cowboys will be fine without him.

Dunbar expands the playbook. It's a big loss IMO.

Cowboy's never really used him properly, so there's really not going to be any noticeable difference with him injured. That being said, I believe if we were actually going to use him more, then yes that's definitely a big loss because he adds another dimension.

He hadn't been used as much due first to fumbling issues then injury. We've lost a playmaker.

they finally identified that his speed is a true change of pace...murray pounding followed by the speed of dunbar....Chicago's defensive staff must have spewed a sigh of relief when they found out that they didn't have to plan for him

I wouldn't classify him as a playmaker quite yet. He is fumble prone and injury prone. He has good speed but then again so did Felix. Dunbar is not a huge loss at this point IMO.

I'm starting to like you more and more. You appear to be a fellow realist.

I dont know why Dallas has rarely ever used WRs out of the backfield. Not necessarily as runners/ball carriers but on sweeps, screens, etc. Beasley is only 10lbs lighter than Dunbar but I'd be another way to take advantage of him. (would like to see Dwayne Harris used like this)

I tend to agree with you.

Dunbar had showed little more than fumbling and blown protection assignments.

Then he had a single game of decent spelling of Murray.

Not enough for me either.

Why the heck is our rookie RB.not ready to play by now...

What's his name?

Time to play.

Dunbar was another body....who has a steller game on thankgiving..not a huge loss

Tyron is a beast quicky becoming one of the best LT in the game....Loved the pick and love how the kid plays

best part about it is he is still a kid..23?..Still has alot of good years and he is humble..likes to not talk just go to work.

One more like him and our OL will be set

Randle? Although I imagine youre being sarcasic but Randle just hasnt (atleast in my eyes) looked spectacular in any way. I know hes young and there is plenty of time for improvement but he has the size of an sparkplug burst RB but just seems really slow to me.

Dunbar will be missed much more than many here think. For this team to have any shot at advancing in the playoffs (hoping and praying that we get there) we desperately needed more explosive and imaginative snaps from the running back position on this offense. Murray is fairly solid at getting some tough yards, but is rarely a threat to gash teams and stretch the field like Dunbar could. I've been waiting all year for the explosive dimension that Dunbar could bring on screens, short passes and wide run plays designed to get him in space ala Darren Sproles and Reggie Bush. Oh well, that didn't last long.

Don't get me wrong, Dunbar was hardly the key to our offense, but it won't be as easy to duplicate what he brought to the table with Randall, Tanner and Beasly. Instead, we'll just have to execute better offensively and hopefully get a healthier defense at least somewhat gelling at just the right time.

Yes..Randle.

He needs to get out of his fog and run the rock now.
