Owner Jerry Jones calls it a priority to address Brandon Carr’s contract in the next two months.
“Without getting vague here, all contracts that we don’t have closure on are a priority,’’ Jones said Wednesday from the team’s annual golf tournament for sponsors. “He certainly is a player who is in our top consideration.
“So yeah, I’d say that’s a priority. We want him on the football field.’’
Carr counts $12.7 million against the salary cap this season. His base is $8 million. That’s a high price for a cornerback who is coming off a season where he failed to intercept a pass.
If Carr refuses to take a reduction, the Cowboys can designate him as a post June 1 cut, meaning his base salary will come off this year’s cap but a charge of $7.4 million will roll into next season. Another option would be to restructure his contract to lessen the cap hit for this season yet provide him with more guaranteed money.
