I think the Cowboys cut Vaughn and keep Showers. They didn't play him because they know what he can do and wanted Vaughn to have a chance to change their minds. Just my 2 cents

I think it is more likely that he didn't get to play so that no team could get a good enough read to pick him up when we cut him and try to put him on the PS.

I liked Johnson as he seemed more physical of a runner, get those tough yards. Malena looked decent, but reminded me of Dunbar.
I liked what I seen of Swaim. I was critical on draft day. Not against Swaim, but for trading next years 6th round for him. Though that is showing it may be a wise trade. However, I think they should have picked Swaim over Nzeocha and / or Gibson. As they could have got both of them as FA's.

But what is done, is done. Hope they do the right thing no matter what. Keep Swaim, Eventually IR Nzeocha, see what he can do next year. Probably put Gibson on the PS.
I think they have a pretty good handle on who they can and can't sign as a UDFA. There are other teams trying to sign them too.

idk i dont think its always the right thing to do to blame the player when Dallas, sans really really good TE's tend to let tight ends go that seem to help other teams. We dont use all tight ends correctly. Why Gavin is not being used in end zones more with his height irks me off. But thats Dallas for you.
Dallas was the best team at scoring TDs in the red zone in the NFL last year (they had the second-highest TD percentage to Oakland, but Oakland had an absurdly small number of red-zone opportunities). They were 3rd-best in 2013. Seems to me that they know what they're doing down there.

various:
Not a lot changed for me over the last month as far as roster guys.

Russell surprised and looks like a rotational guy that is active on game days.

Lucky Whitehead brought me aboard after a rough early bout with ball security. He's been better as a WR and more important ball secure.
He also looks a little thicker than I judged him game 1; maybe he's benefiting from the Cowboys food plans. He is the only guy who really moved my roster needle.

Swaim has some ability but it is overblown by the fan base. He is a moderate blocker and a moderate Receiver. Could be a really well-rounded guy in 2 years. But I don't think he helps you this year. He did get snaps with the ones but that's because they had TE's on ice.

Coleman has shown glimpses of what he did in college. He really looks disruptive and quick. Wonder if he lost weight and worked more on explosion because it does look like it.

I'd take Gus AND Malena to the PS. I could see one or even both as part of a RBBC here next year.

QB. I think I am still at 3 or 4 not 2. Can Showers do enough to warrant a 4th QB spot that is really all ST? If it is an extra LB, extra S or Showers who helps ST most?

My last 5 roster spots: 5th WR(might be Street instead of Whitehead now), 4th TE, 9th OL, 7th LB, and last ST guy be it 4th S or Showers.
I could see the 9th OL come from another team's cut list.

I don't think Broaddus liked the pick from day 1. And he's wrong, they were right.

I think it is more a case of the organization expected Swaim to be a blocking TE and serve as a younger, cheaper alternative to Hanna. He turned out to be a relatively poor blocker, but a decent receiving TE. He isn't really a viable replacement for Hanna and not good enough to replace Escobar.

Every time Garrett has talked about him since day 1 is that he's a Y like Witten and that those types are difficult to find these days. (spread offenses)

Yep, maybe they see him as an eventual fill in for Hanna. Get him on the practice squad, give him a year to get stronger, better at blocking. Also, with Hanna going into his final year, can Swaim learn enough to be his cheaper replacement. They obviously like him, prime PC contender if they can get him through. Without spending yet another 2nd rounder in upcoming drafts, maybe they see him as an eventual mini-me for Witten ?

Saw that Raiders stat on SNF, only 29 trips to the red zone last season....

I think they have something with Swaim in that he can develop into JW. He isn't better than Hanna or Escobar, but he has the potential to be better at both at each of their strengths.

Witten wasn't the best blocker when he came into the league, so I think Swaim is a guy we can develop to be an all around TE in the mold of Witten. I say we keep the guy and try and develop him and quit wasting 2nd round picks on TE's.

I was puzzled by why they played Vaughn the entire game, but that's a good explanation there.

Swaim is not good enough to justify cutting one of the Defensive guys that are a lot more valuable NOW.
