IRVING, Texas – I got home from New Orleans a little after 3 a.m., and I got to work on the tape from this game a little after 8 a.m.

It was a grind today, working through this game – especially given the way it ended for the Cowboys in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. But there’s plenty we can learn from taking a longer look at the second loss of this young season.

Let’s look inside and see what went wrong Sunday night, and why:

I had a feeling that Rob Ryan was going to do his best to choke the Dallas offense and their ability to run the ball. Throughout the game, Ryan challenged this line to have to block a seven, eight and even an occasional nine-man box. Ryan made the commitment, but without the threat to the outside this offense was in a bad spot in having to deal with more defenders than blockers. Ideally you would like to run away from the extra man, and the offense was able to do that -- but what got them in trouble was that extra man was running from the backside like Bobby Richardson and Hau’oli Kikaha were able to do.

I usually like his breakdowns...but man...this has got to be his worst yet. Love how he complimented Witten as one of the NFL's best blockers(And he isn't) then gives and example how he misses a block on a 3rd and short on Christy's run.

then to heap praise on Hitchens.....good greif. Watch Damien Wilson beat him to the tackle on the Saints TD. That play right there still shows Hitchins is still thinking out there....instead of reacting.

Some fair observations.

I would hit Tyron harder and McFadden less. The line has not been good and there appears no sign of improvement. McFadded (and Randle) really had nowhere to go. Leary was atrocious at times. Hanna also reverted back to some horrid blocking

Hanna isn't healthy. Doubt Leary is either but it's his contract year and he's battling a guy with insane upside so he'll do everything possible to play.
The running game needs help from the passing game.
Trading for a WR would be my top priority to fix the running game.

At this point TO may even be right. He actually could help this sad group of outside WRs. --Not that we should ever consider him as there are also 100 other WRs who could help us.

I love these updates. I think on the sack he was referring to, I also think that Weeden backed into the sack instead of stepping up. I also see why Bishop was release with the way Irving was flashing.

Oddly enough, I heard Anthony Becht on the radio and he said TE blocking is a dying art and he said Witten is one of the better blocking TEs left in football.

Yes, Weeden caused the sack. Tyron was pushing the pass rusher past the pocket in standard fashion. Weeden can't just back out of the pocket like he did.

Witten is hands down one of the best remaining TEs, with a position thats about to be another WR. Even Gonzales praised Witten, Witten gets respect from coaches and players alike.

Wow. Very strong analysis. I'm shocked that He pretty much nailed every one of my post game thoughts.

if you cannot stone the DE/OLB you make him go outside and around so that the QB can step up in the pocket. Weedon did the exact opposite and I agree that sack is much more on Weedon then Smith.

Even if Tyron can stone the rusher, it's generally better to get him out of the passing lane by letting him loop wide and deep.

Weeden has minimal pocket awareness.

Kinda hard to block the same guy, on the same play, from the same formation.... THREE PLAYS IN A ROW...

Many good points. I know he's not popular among many here. I like him and think he does a fine job.

I think some just like to harp for its own sake. He, like everyone here, is human and makes his share.

Some forget the difference between fact and sharing their opinion based on their closeness to the club. He's an asset to the fans and I don't understand why they harp unless...see above.

He has an extreme reluctance to step up. His first instinct is to go backwards and this is frequently going to result in plays like that. Unless the tackle has the DE completely shut down, more often than not they are going to try for the edge and Weeden is giving it to him. Absolutely ridiculous Broaddus made no mention of that.

You should be accustomed to Broaddus creating false narratives.
