OXNARD, Calif. – Cole Beasley has found his role in the Cowboys’ offense. A valuable one, at that. He put on a show with several catches in Sunday’s Blue-White scrimmage, including a touchdown in team drills.

The Cowboys’ third receiver also welcomes the chance to return punts this season if called upon.

“Any extra opportunities to get the ball in my hands,” he said earlier in the week, “I’m definitely all for it.”

Beasley said he returned a few punts as a senior at SMU, and he’s taken preseason reps for the Cowboys in the past. But the job belonged to Dwayne Harris full time the last two seasons, and now the club is looking for his replacement on kick and punt returns.

Beasley’s hands, his quickness and his feel for finding openings in traffic all make him a good candidate for fielding punts. He ripped off a long return in Sunday’s scrimmage, though tackling wasn’t permitted.

I'd like to see him back there occasionally.

Huge fan of Cole Beasley's.

That being said, if Lucky Whitehead or Reggie Dunn can bring a speed dynamic there, that is something we've been missing for some time.

I think Whitehead is the long term option there, but if Beasley is the one the coaching staff is most comfortable, I'd like to see him as the primary punt returner. Dez can do it situationally, and Whitehead can get mixed in depending on the score

What's it going to be then, eh?

Have not heard a lot about Dunn.

I think this team has finally found its' own Wes Welker after several years of looking. They thought they had one in Danny Amendola, but the development process took too long. But it looks like they've found it in Beasley. He appears primed for a big year.

But, given his slight frame, I wouldn't want to risk losing him long term for the prospect of using him as a punt returner. He's too valuable to Romo and the offense.

Neither have I, but I think special teams is one of those things where you really can't tell if a player is worth anything until you see them performing against live bullets.

I think Whitehead and Dunn both have some potential because of their speed, and I'll be interested to see what they do in preseason games.

There's been a smattering of positive reviews, but mostly as a wr. we know he can handle ko duties from his school days, not sure about punt returns however.

If development process equals a less than one-year evaluation on the practice squad, I agree but he wasn't given an opportunity to grow in our system. Afterwards, Philadelphia quickly snatched Amendola off our practice squad. The Eagles proceeded to give up on Amendola even faster than we did. St. Louis finally invested real time developing Amendola but they were more in need of receiver help than anything else. In my opinion, their desperation contributed to Amendola's big break.

I was high on Amendola when he was here. He has good hands, quickness, and runs not great but solid routes. However, he has not demonstrated durability throughout his career as a starter. Amendola was never a number one class wide receiver and not an outstanding number two receiver as well. His injuries make me wonder if he would have been worth the effort of developing him into a slot receiver in our offense..
