Austin Is Likely To Sign Tender By June 1

We've been talking a lot about Rams safety O.J. Atogwe, and what will happen after June 1, assuming he doesn't sign his restricted free agency tender.

In Atogwe's case it's smart to wait. He'll become unrestricted on that date, or force St. Louis to increase its one-year offer to $7 million. What does that deadline mean for the Cowboys' big ticket RFA, Miles Austin?

Now, Austin wouldn't answer the June 1 question at Cowboys Golf Club on Wednesday, saying only that by the first of next month he'll still be trying to get better every day (now this is someone who's on the same page with Tony Romo).

But the logical answer is yes, Austin will most likely sign and play for $3.168 million in 2010. If he didn't, the Cowboys could continue to protect his rights but decrease their contract offer to 110 percent of his 2009 salary.

Austin got the second-round tender in '09, playing for $1.55 million. If he didn't sign by June 1, the Cowboys would only have to pay him $1.7 million for his 2010 services.
