Those of us who were present for every practice during training camp have been awfully surprised by Martellus Bennett's lack of production in the passing game. In the summer it appeared the second-year tight end would be a focal point of the offense.
It's not really a stretch to estimate Bennett would catch about as many balls at a single practice in the Alamodome as he's caught during the first half of the season, nine.
No, the Cowboys haven't gone out of their way to get him the ball, and the offense seems to be working fine without much of an impact from Bennett in the passing game. And it's not like Bennett isn't doing good things.
"He blocks so well in the game," Wade Phillips said. "He's been working on blocking and receiving. I thought he had a heck of a game blocking-wise. He just hasn't blossomed yet in the passing game, although we still think he has the potential."
The Cowboys are willing to exercise some patience here, because they've seen what all Bennett can do. A couple balls did bounce off his hands against the Eagles, so execution has to be in the equation. We know Bennett had really high expectations for himself this year as well. Maybe he's just pressing.
