Atogwe . . . It’s Certainly Worth Considering

The only reason why the Cowboys probably won’t go this route and acquire Rams free agent safety O.J. Atogwe, is that it would go against the basic theme of the offseason.
The Cowboys haven’t been spending money and you would certainly have to for this guy, who is probably wanting somewhere in the $7 million per season range.
The Cowboys have been putting the focus on their younger talent, with the hope that Doug Free and in this case, Alan Ball, can develop into solid performers just like Mike Jenkins, Anthony Spencer and Miles Austin all did last season.
Still, we’re talking about SAFETY here. You know, the position the Cowboys just can’t seem to solve with first-round picks, free-agent signings or mid-round draft picks with time to develop. Every year, it seems like safety is the position the Cowboys are trying to revamp.
Well, knowing that, you have to wonder if even this guy – this O.J. Atogwe – would do the trick. Who knows, but give me a guy that has 18 interceptions in the last four years. In the last two years, the Cowboys as a team have 19 picks.
Atogwe also forced 14 fumbles in the last four years. That’s more than the guys we all love like Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu. Obviously, this guy knows how to get around the football.
Would he cost a lot? Yeah, probably. But to get a guy who can create turnovers – for the Rams – and to put him on this team that has two Pro Bowl corners, a savvy safety in Gerald Sensabaugh alongside him, not to mention an All-Pro at outside linebacker and nose tackle – that seems to be a natural fit.
Sure, the Cowboys want to see more of Alan Ball, but they’re also working him right now at some cornerback in place of Orlando Scandrick. I’ve said it all along that I think Ball is more of a cornerback and I think there are a few guys on the coaching staff that agree.
To me, you don’t go into a season like this, where you’re going to be one of the heavy favorites to win (and host) the Super Bowl, without covering yourself at all positions.
So, in the case of spending other people’s money, I say the Cowboys undoubtedly should go after O.J. Atogwe.
