Ball has been credited with four tackles in the exhibition season, but he finally made the glaring mistake folks were worried about on an 18 run by the Texans' Arian Foster in the first quarter on Saturday.

Wade Phillips said Ball typically wouldn't even have been asked to make that play, but the Cowboys were mismatched in personnel on the down because they were holding back.

On another play, which was called back by holding penalty, Ball got Foster to the ground, but only after he was run over for a would-be touchdown. He may not be the stoutest goal line defender, but coaches still say Ball (6-2, 195) has progressed as a tackler.

I'm not too worried. Your FS should be your "Just in case" kind of guy.. but if RB's are consistently getting into your secondary, your problem isn't your FS.. it's the guys up front.

I want to see this guy make plays on the ball.. not tackling HB's in the secondary.

That's the trade off you pay.

Unless we have an All-Pro back there who can do both equally well, I'd much rather take the safety who can make plays on the ball, rather than the one who is better in run support.

No Ball is not perfect, but he's an upgrade from pretty much any other safety we would have been able to get, and he didn't cost a fortune like Otogwe would have.

He missed one tackle in that game. I don't know if there's any safety in this league, Roy Williams included that would've stopped the RB from getting in the endzone on that other running play. I don't see that as a weakness. There's also a reason the play got called back.

But I guess we have to find something to blog about.

QFT...

If you have a recording of the game - spy Mike Jenkin's wiffs in the Houston Game - you'll cringe at the atrocity of something he classified as tackling or attempt there of. He sure seems scared of contact.

Maybe ... just may be the whole starters wanted to get home without any major injuries. Atleast thats what was indicated by Caryton. Lets give the benefit of doubt until the season starts.

I'm not worried about it. Ball was closing in fast and just as he was breaking down to make the tackle, Foster made an amazing cut. That cut would have left probably 95% of the players in the NFL grasping for air.

He should still be able to make a tackle... Mike Jenkins missed a sure tackle as well, Dallas checked out that game once they hit the field.

Oh....
Morgan Burnett isn't the best tackler either but atleast he can make plays on the ball. we had a shot at him too.......

The whole team's tackling was an issue.

That`s what happens when you play two-hand-touch in practice instead of tackling.

uh-oh....dissention in the ranks

No wonder Hamlin never made any plays, the scheme was set up for him not to be anywhere around the play. This explains a lot.
