With no limit on the size of the roster until training camp, the Cowboys continue to turn over stones in search of potential players.

On Thursday the club signed three players, including 26-year-old wide receiver Mike Jefferson, who was on the Cowboys' 53-man roster for the season opener last year, but didn't dress. Jefferson was sent back to the practice squad the next week, and was later suspended four games for violating the league's performance enhancing drugs policy. He was released after the suspension was completed, and spent the remainder of 2008 in the Bills organization.

Also signed by the Cowboys on Thursday were tight end Scott Chandler and defensive end Derreck Robinson. Chandler, a 6-7, 265-pounder from Iowa, has been with the Chargers since 2007, but only appeared in one game. He spent the 2008 season on injured reserve, and was waived by San Diego the Friday before this April's NFL Draft.

Robinson, who also played his college ball for the Hawkeyes, was out of football in 2008. The 6-5, 294 pound end has experience in Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme, having played under the Cowboys coach in San Diego from 2005-06. He spent the 2007 season in Miami. The 27-year-old Robinson has played in 23 games in his three-year career, and has 21 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

On Tuesday the Cowboys waived two players, defensive back Tra Battle and defensive lineman Casey Tyler.

They liked Jefferson last year. I bet the 4th and long winner is a DB. If they knew they were getting another WR for camp, there's not much need for another WR camp body.

Extra TE was necessary due to Hannah's injury.

Another DE with experience in Wade's D could simply be turning over stones in anticipation of Spears, Bowen, and/or Hatcher leaving in free agency next year. Some cheap depth at the position stashed on the practice squad seems a certainty this year.

Considering his prior games played, I don't think the DE would qualify for the practice squad.

I bet the 4th and long winner wasn't even a factor in this decision. The winner will be lucky to make the practice squad.

And yet Jerry Jones is not signing players who have been in trouble because we got rid of all of those guys, right?

Chandler can cacth - I think he has shot at making the team

With star tight end Antonio Gates sidelined because of offseason toe surgery, the Chargers gave Chandler a heavy workload during their offseason coaching sessions. They need him prepared in case Gates isn't recovered by the start of the season. "Obviously, it's not good for us to have Antonio on the sidelines," Chandler said recently. "For me personally, it's a good opportunity to get a lot of reps and to really improve."

Derreck Robinson-DL- Cowboys May. 28 - 4:09 pm et

Cowboys signed DE Derreck Robinson, formerly of the Dolphins.

Robinson offers 23 games of NFL experience, all with San Diego. He played under Wade Phillips when Phillips coordinated the Bolts' defense, but was out of football all last season and is very low on the Cowboys' depth chart.

Scott Chandler-TE- Cowboys May. 28 - 4:07 pm et

Cowboys signed TE Scott Chandler, formerly of the Chargers.

He's needed because third TE Rodney Hannah's hand is broken. A former receiver at Iowa, Chandler was San Diego's fourth-round pick in 2007. He's been plagued by injuries, however, and has little chance to make the club.

Mike Jefferson-WR- Cowboys May. 28 - 4:05 pm et

Cowboys signed WR Mike Jefferson, formerly of the Bills.

Jefferson, 26, was in Cowboys camp last offseason and showed little. He'll act as a practice body with Isaiah Stanback recovering from knee surgery.
