Although the team has made no official comment, reports have surfaced that the Cowboys are exploring the possibility of holding a split training camp in San Antonio -- honoring their five-year contract with the city -- and Oxnard, Calif., where they trained from 2004-06 and again in 2008.

As we mentioned in an earlier post, participation in this year's Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, would make a split camp more logical. The Hall of Fame game -- the league's first of the preseason -- adds an extra (fifth) game to the team's exhibition schedule. Camp would start earlier, which means more time to train in two different places.

The other caveat, I'd imagine, is getting a preseason game or two in California (Chargers, Raiders or 49ers, though I think San Francisco would make a fitting Hall of Fame game opponent). Playing out there would cut down on excessive travel. The preseason schedule probably will be announced at the end of March.

Nothing's official here, but just something to think about.

they need to move to Oxnard full time. San Antonio is a terrible place for a summer training camp, and Southern California is perfect.

I liked it when it was at St. Edwards in Austin. I always figured if Texas High School and Texas college kids could pull 2 a days in the Texas heat so can the pros. When Dallas was there in the 90's it did not seem to hurt us at all.
