Can McBriar Hit The Scoreboard?
Posted by jellis at 8/3/2009 7:04 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com
Other than questions about Jesse Holley or people wondering whether the Cowboys will sign Michael Vick or how the running backs will split carries, we seem to be getting one question awfully frequently.
Will Cowboys punter Mat McBriar or another kicker hit the digital media boards suspended over the field at Cowboys Stadium.
For the longest time I didn't think there was a chance, until the first time I got to visit field level at the stadium and saw just how low the seven-story tall structure appears to be hanging over the field. It really seemed like a possibility.
"Well, we tested McBriar here two years ago," Wade Phillips said the other day, referring to the punter's effort to boot a ball into the old San Antonio Spurs scoreboard when the Cowboys held camp here in 2007. "I think they measured it, somehow, with a laser."
"Some of that figured into how high they put the JumboTron," Phillips said. "I think it may be possible to hit it, but you’d have to be kicking the ball straight up. Which you don’t do. If you’re trying to kick a 40-yard punt, you not trying to kick it 95 feet straight up. I think it may be possible to hit it. Probably won’t be a factor. If it is, it’s foul ball, replay."
We asked McBriar in the hotel the other night if he thought he could do it, the Aussie coming back with a grin and a chuckle - he didn't think so.
Not a big deal, obviously, but hopefully we can put to bed some of that curiosity. Can you believe the first preseason game at the stadium is now just 18 days away?
Hurd: I'm the No. 4 Receiver

One week into training camp, San Antonio native Sam Hurd might be the most impressive receiver inside the Alamodome. He looks faster and more explosive and has made at least one terrific catch each day.
Yet the fourth-year veteran still considers himself fourth on the depth chart.
"Right now it's Roy (Williams), Pat (Crayton), Miles (Austin) and me," he said. "I go in as the fourth receiver. I embrace my roles. I can always move up."
We'll have more on Hurd later this week. Whether he can carry this momentum into the preseason and regular season remains to be seen, but you can bet he and Austin are making the Cowboys feel better about entrusting them with more opportunities post-T.O.
As for the receiver rotation, head coach Wade Phillips drew some laughs when asked if Crayton, Austin and Hurd are fighting for the No. 2 spot opposite Williams.
"I think they're all competing," he said, then drove away in his personal golf cart.
For the record, Crayton has consistently lined up as the second wideout.
