[FONT=verdana, geneva]I've gotten a couple of questions on why free safety Ken Hamlin, the "quarterback" of the defense, isn't designated to wear the defensive communication device in his helmet when Bradie James and Kevin Burnett aren't three-down players.
Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart said he'd rather not use a defensive back because he's playing downfield and doesn't always get back to the huddle quickly.
The communication signal only is available for a few seconds before each play. Stewart said Burnett does indeed carry two separate helmets - one equipped with the device and one without - in case he and James are on the field at the same time. As long as the league signs off on it, James and Burnett are the point men.
Barring any signal glitches, Stewart thinks the new rule will be beneficial for the defense because it allows him to make calls more quickly and efficiently.
