While the Cowboys appear to be rather set at the running back position this year, they still need someone to run the ball in practice, especially during this weekend’s rookie mini-camp at Valley Ranch, which begins Friday.

That’s one reason why the club will re-sign running back Keon Lattimore, who went to training camp with the Cowboys last season.

Lattimore, the half-brother of Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis, played in all four preseason games with the Cowboys before being cut on Aug. 30. The University of Maryland product was out of football until he joined the Jaguars practice squad on Dec. 10. Lattimore was in Jacksonville until he was released at the end of the season.

It’s unlikely Lattimore will be able to push for a roster spot, considering the Cowboys have Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, along with Alonzo Coleman, who spent most of the last two years on the practice squad and the last few weeks of the 2008 season on the active roster.

This weekend’s mini-camp will include 20 rookies - 12 draft picks and eight rookie free agents - who will arrive at Valley Ranch on Thursday to take physicals and get fitted for their helmets and uniforms. The rookie free agents will officially sign their contracts.

The Cowboys will also have a handful of first-year players who were on the practice squad last year.

Why waste our time ? this cat has nothing.

Did you read the article? They need someone to run the ball in practice, especially during this rookie camp. They drafted all those defensive players so they need someone for them to chase around and tackle. Thats all it is.

i disagree, i saw some things in the film, especially the attitude to hit anything that moves, and a few moves in the film they showed last year on hard knocks. Woohoo! were going to resign him.

It's the first sentence.

Did also see him in that preseason game when he finally got some action...

He ran out of bounds when he only needed a yard or 2 to get a 1st down on 3rd down.

Cant Coleman run the rock? Why would Lattimore sign for just a month?

Anything to get a foot in the door is why he would do that.

I could be wrong, but this signing should send the same message that the 12 drafted rookies did: No one is safe!!! With all the praise our RB trio has received, despite the dismal season they were discovered in, I think it's good that they be asked in so many signing's, "But what have you done for me lately?"

I don't think Barber, Choice or Felix are too concerned over Lattimore being brought into the rookie camp.

No, I imagine they are not worried.

Dallas is doing it to have extra bodies for the mini-camps. They also want to have someone familiar with their system. Lattimore is worse case insurance should Barber, Choice and Jones are all lost for the year due to injury.

Obviously Lattimore is not on any teams roster, so I can see why he signed when given an offer. Anything that gets him much needed reps in an NFL offense.

i thought he weighed about 215 or so, thats why i said let him put on about 15 pounds more;
here is bio on him below says 223;

Keon Lattimore

Owings Mills, Md.

High School:
Mount St. Joseph's HS/Hargrave Military Academy

Height / Weight:
5-11 / 223

A big, powerful running back who has the ability to elude defenders and flash bursts of quickness ... a strong blocker ... an All-ACC performer who joined Lance Ball to form one of the top tailback duos in the country over their final two seasons ... ended his career 14th on the Terps' career rushing yards list (1,744) ... played in the 2008 Hula Bowl ... saw limited action, gaining six yards on five carries ... his six career 100-yard rushing games are tied for fifth in school history ... his 19 career rushing scores are tied for ninth on the Maryland career chart ... played in 37 career games, including 25 of 26 over his final two seasons.

Coleman should be. I don't see any reason to keep him around if Lattimore out-performs him. Just let them battle it out for a potential fourth RB spot through camp into preseason (I really only think we keep 3 RBs and a FB in the end however).

Its a decent move as he could be a bigger back option we don't have. We have two backs in Choice and Jones who are faster and significantly than Coleman and we also have other kickoff return options better than he is as well. I don't see much that Coleman has to offer. Lattimore could be a better special teams type as well as a short yardage option.

well im thinking sometimes it takes a player a year or 2 to grow up, this would be lattimore's 2nd year;

Granted Colman should be. Forgot all about him which says it all. :laugh2:
