Adam Jones Fields A Punt . . . Or Six

Other than just lock down on wide receivers, the Cowboys are also hoping Adam Jones can contribute as a punt returner this year, too. The Pacman already has four touchdowns on punt returns in two NFL seasons, including three in 2006.

But the first part of a big return is simply catching the ball. And Jones put on quite a show here before Monday’s afternoon practice.

Not only did he prove he can catch the ball, but he didn’t let go of it. He just tucked it under his arm and waited for the next punt. He got that one two, stuck it up by his arm pit with the next ball.

Then came another, and another, and another. Jones had five footballs in his arms as he waited for yet another of rookie Jay Ottovegio’s punts. The sixth ball went up, Jones got underneath it and somehow managed to catch that one as well, which drew quite an ovation from the onlookers, that includes coaches and teammates. With six balls in his arms, Jones threw all of them up in the air before receiving several high-fives, including one from head coach Wade Phillips.

Patrick Crayton, who handled the punt-return duties last year, tried to get it on the act, too. He caught four balls before failing to haul in the fifth kick. Crayton fell to the ground and the balls went everywhere.

It was a pretty interesting drill that certainly poses the question: If you can catch six punts, you should have no problems catching just one in the games, right?

We’ll see.
