Garrett Wants To Play McGee, But ...

Posted by jellis at 11/12/2010 3:36 PM CST

For all the folks asking whether the Cowboys are considering starting second-year quarterback Stephen McGee at some point this year, think about looking backward for an answer.

With the Cowboys never really competitive in the second half against Green Bay last week, Jon Kitna played the entire game regardless. Now, Wade Phillips was the head coach in that game, not Jason Garrett, but it doesn't sound like Garrett sees things any differently than Phillips did in this respect.

Garrett says he wants to play McGee, but Kitna gives the Cowboys the best chance to win at this point.

Garrett wants to change the culture on the Cowboys as quickly as he can. Part of that is ensuring the players believe they have a chance to win something & want them to go all act and as a team work together to do the best they can. If they believe he's throwing in the towel by playing McGee, they may continue to be motivated (hopefully) but emotional is what he wants them to commit too.

Like with Buehler the last thing you want to do is throw a guy to the wolves ie; the Giants pass rush. Letting the guy come along slowly and build his confidence if you can will build a foundation - if you think he's your guy that is. Of course, if they mash up Kitna Sunday it won't matter.

Kitna is praying he catches the flu before the Giants game. He may not live through the first half.

That's a point that I mentioned a while back. Not quite as good as you put it but still something I was at least trying to get out.

I agree. Throwing in McGee makes his system a hard sell.

You want players to buy into what you have but doing something that can bee seen as giving up doesn't help out.

Holy Misleading Blog Titles...

I've always been a big McGee fan, but why would we want him to play? One recent blog post said he was "the future"... What? Unless something goes terribly wrong, Tony is the future for the next several years.

Garrett needs to put the best product he can on the field. The players he thinks give him the best competitive edge even if its a losing one. He needs to impress the owner otherwise he's gone next year. I'm sure Garrett covets the HC job for the Dallas Cowboys.

Uh, Kitna is here because of Garrett... Why would he start McGee?

he would play McGhee..........................................but

he sucks!

I do not think Garrett can afford to play McGee right now.

If Kitna becomes statue-esque, then give a guy with a little more mobility a chance. It may not be a carbon copy of Bledsoe-Romo, but even a glimmer of that would be nice!
