How Many Receivers Do the Cowboys Keep?

While it's still not out of the realm of possibility the Cowboys would look to acquire a veteran receiver before the start of the season, coach Wade Phillips sounded comfortable with the guys currently on the roster. When he was asked how many receivers the team might keep Monday, he said the evaluation process is ongoing.

Phillips said third-year receiver Miles Austin has made the team. He was making a strong case to be the No. Three receiver before spraining his right MCL Saturday. Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton and probably Sam Hurd all have their roster spots locked up as well. The big question now is whether the Cowboys keep five or six players at the position.

"You only have four (receivers active) out of the 45 for the game," Phillips said. "You can keep six and put two inactive or keep five and play the other four."

Those end-of-the-depth chart guys need to be special teams contributors, of course. That's why guys like Isaiah Stanback and Danny Amendola have been given plenty of chances to return kickoffs and punts this season.

"Unless they're a good enough receiver that you think they're going to be a star," Phillips said. "You look at their importance to the team and that's why you keep them. If you think they're important enough to the team or their future is important enough, that's who you keep. When it comes down to those last guys that's what you look at."
