However many bags of sunflower seeds were packed for Saturday’s game against the 49ers, the Cowboys’ equipment staff will likely triple that for next week’s game in Minnesota.

Typically, preseason finales are will feature mostly backups, and particularly third-teamers. For the starters, if they even play at all, their night will consist of no-pads, baseball caps and their choice of snacks.

But with so many nagging injuries sustained in the second half, and throw in the fact of a short week with the Cowboys playing on Friday and leaving for Minneapolis on Thursday, some of the starters may have to play.

Even at the end of Saturday’s game, the Cowboys were so thin at defensive back, they couldn’t even play their dime and nickel packages. Unless guys like Mike Mickens and DeAngelo Smith are prepared to play the whole game, the Cowboys might have to use Orlando Scandrick or Mike Jenkins for a series or two.

The same goes at safety, where Mike Hamlin is out with a broken wrist. And linebacker remains thin, with now Jason Williams going down with a sprained ankle.

For the most part, the plan will remain the same, but with so many injuries, there could be a few more starters getting some playing time than usual.

No starters need to play in that game Friday, we dont want to become thinner at anymore positions.
