Some Practice Observations
Posted by jellis at 7/27/2008 4:45 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com
The team just finished stretching. They've split up into position-specific drills now. Check back for constant updates to this thread the next couple hours as I'll be your eyes and ears.
---
2:48 p.m. (PDT) The defensive backs are right in front of us at the moment. I don't recall them ever pushing a sled before but I looked up just in time to see second-year cornerback Alan Ball pushing an individual sled a good 20 yards. Some of the other guys in the group were cheering him on for the max effort.
---
2:52 p.m. (PDT) Brad Johnson is in his element now. The quarterbacks and running backs are practicing swing passes. His arm really has touch, but the thing is, that's about all he's got. Think Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer.
---
2:55 p.m. (PDT) Jerry Jones isn't just on the sidelines during games, he likes to watch practice too. He and son Stephen, the team's executive vice president, have been on the sideline between the two practice fields for each workout since camp started.
---
2:59 p.m. (PDT) One of the really fun things about camp is seeing all the teaching that goes on. Coaching isn't about screaming at people, it's about transferring knowledge. It'll be neat to see what's happening in the meetings once HBO's "Hard Knocks" starts, but for now it's just cool to see guys like Dave Campo and defensive coordinator Brian Stewart teaching the young guys technique and theory during practice.
---
3:05 p.m. (PDT) First-year linebacker Tearrius George has been working some on the outside with the second-team, but not today. We just saw him walk out to the practice field with trainers and a good deal of tape on his right knee, which he apparently tweaked yesterday. That's the first practice missed due to injury of this camp.
---
3:12 p.m. (PDT) Receivers Miles Austin and Sam Hurd ran nice routes in back-to-back plays to beat cornerbacks Alan Ball and Anthony Henry, respectively, in one-on-one drills. Adam Jones and Patrick Crayton keep the trash talking up in this drill.
---
3:21 p.m. (PDT) Maybe the most exciting play of camp thus far. It was Adam Jones' turn to cover the receiver in one-on-one drills when T.O. broke in line to go against him. It was Richard Bartel's turn to throw, but Tony Romo yanked him out of the way. Jones starts pumping up the crowd.
Time to test the new guy. Jones ran stride for stride with Owens until about 25 yards downfield when the veteran receiver gave him one of the sickest hip fakes you'll see. Jones went left, and Owens went right on a post route, buying himself a good 15 feet of seperation. Romo threw a beautiful 40-yard strike and Owens scored, spiking the ball.
On the way back to the huddle the thousands of Cowboys fans in attendance serenaded 81 with chants of "T.O.! T.O.!"
Owens put his hand up to his ear so he could hear better. I think he wanted to make sure Jones heard it too, as the badly-beaten cornerback walked back to the drill with his head down.
---
3:49 p.m. (PDT) Romo and T.O. just did it again. This time Owens split first-round pick Mike Jenkins and safety Pat Watkins on a post route for an easy 40-yard touchdown pass in 7-on-7 drills. Owens is owning this training camp so far.
---
3:52 p.m. (PDT) Tight end Tony Curtis is having a pretty nice day so far. He's had a couple nice catches in tight coverage working against the defensive backs. We'll see what he does, he could become the team's second tight end despite the draft status of Martellus Bennett. Expect more from us on Curtis in the next day or two.
Team Drills Notes

Sorry I couldn't keep blogging through team drills - it's the most important part of practice but I just can't get the old laptop over there where I can see. So here's the scoop...
Tony Romo completed five of his six pass attempts, two to Jason Witten and two to Terrell Owens, who had Adam Jones slipping on a crossing route. Owens abused Jones all day. Romo also connected with running back Marion Barber on a swing pass.
First-year receiver Mike Jefferson had the best day of any offensive player in team drills, catching three balls. Jay Ratliff led the defense, corralling Romo for a would-be sack and recovering a fumble after Romo and Barber collided on a handoff.
After Justin Rogers (who had been working with the second team at inside linebacker) left practice hurt, Bobby Carpenter moved into his slot.
Zach Thomas was all over the field, making stops on sweeps and perimeter plays from sideline to sideline. Tank Johnson made a nice play to sniff out a screen pass for a loss of about five yards. Terence Newman dropped an easy interception from Richard Bartel, who struggled, also getting rookie receiver Danny Amendola laid out by Ken Hamlin on a skinny post. Quarterback Jeff Terrell struggled too, and fumbled a shotgun snap. That's a big no-no.
