Rob Phillips made an important point on the blog yesterday to remind us about the Cowboys' need to bring in special teams depth through the draft, as Jerry Jones said when he was at the Senior Bowl a couple weeks back.
During a conference call this morning I had the chance to ask ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. to name some of the better kick and punt coverage guys available this year - I mean who else but Kiper would know the answer to that?
Kiper seems convinced the Cowboys must draft a safety, because he named seven players, and the first five were all safeties. The last two guys are cornerbacks, and the Cowboys could probably use one of those, too.
"Darcel McBath from Texas Tech’s a guy, Chip Vaughn from Wake Forest would be another guy,” Kiper said.
“An Otis Wiley from Michigan State would be another guy, Kevin Ellison from USC, some guys that could help you in that area. Leon Best from East Carolina, Joe Burnett from Central Florida, Grover Quinn from New Mexico, those would be some guys I think for the kick and punt coverage units would be good players in the middle rounds."
