* Cowboys soon-to-be free agent defensive end Chris Canty recently made an appearance on Sirius NFL Radio’s Movin The Chains with Pat Kirwan and Ross Tucker, who asked the fourth-year veteran, “Why do you think you guys haven’t been able to get anything done at this point? Have there been contract discussions that for whatever reason haven’t worked out? Because it seems surprising to me that they wouldn’t have found a way to get you sealed up already.”
Canty, knowing other teammates were extended over the past two seasons, replied by saying, “You know, it definitely is surprising. I feel like I am a big part of their football team and that it’s surprising that we haven’t been able to come to an agreement at this point. And there’s only been very limited contact when it comes to negotiating the extension but I think it is what it is and the football team has to make decisions that are in its best interest and we just kind of have to just wait and see.”
Well, evidently some exploratory talks did take place during the season, but I’m told the two sides were so far apart the Cowboys basically decided to wait and see. Canty, though, has been one of the few players this off-season not to throw everyone under the bus for the 9-7 season when asked, “Chris, is there any part of you that kind of wants to get away from the soap opera that is that Dallas Cowboys or do you like being in the spotlight?”
Said Canty: “I’ll tell you what, I like playing with my teammates. Those guys in Dallas are good football players. We had some good guys in the locker room regardless of what some reports might be in the media and every football team has its issues but obviously when you’re playing for the Dallas Cowboys everything is publicized much more than these other football teams. So, I think sometimes that can kinda be a detriment to us but there are some good guys in that locker room that are about winning football games and I like playing with those guys.”
Very interesting.
* This shocking news just in: Adam “Pacman” Jones, released Monday by the Cowboys on the first day players could be officially released, cleared waivers on Tuesday. That means not one of the other 31 teams even bothered to claim his rights knowing he’s down for a $1 million base salary in 2009. Pacman is back on the streets, and probably willing to sign for the fourth-year minimum of $535,000.
* This just goes to show you how desperate teams likely will be in the free-agent quarterback market this year. Cleveland released backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski (seven of 21 for 26 yards, no touchdowns, three interceptions and four sacks) on Monday and waiver claims were put in by San Francisco and Oakland, which was awarded his rights on Tuesday. Also, Tampa Bay re-signed QB Bruce McCown, paying him a reported $2.5 million signing bonus along with a $2.5 million base in 2009. That’s $5 mil for a guy who threw one pass last year, and incomplete at that.
