The Cowboys are about to get deeper at safety. Rookie Mike Hamlin says he's ready to return after missing the first five games with a broken arm.

Hamlin said he expects to practice Wednesday, but head coach Wade Phillips indicated he will hold out all players this week who have been injured. Either way, Hamlin should be available Oct. 25 against Atlanta.

The fifth-round pick would provide insurance at safety with starter Gerald Sensabaugh recovering from thumb surgery. His immediate focus probably is special teams, and the Cowboys were counting on him as a core guy before he got injured. He'll wear a cast for protection.

Our game day active roster will be a little harder to choose now with all of these players returning, plus the signing of Rossum.

Interesting that he expects to practice tomorrow... Maybe Wade was playing possum when he said he'd start to practice next week.

He was supposed to be out 5 weeks. 7 Weeks later he's ready. Would be nice to get some production out of him, especially the way the other Hamlin is playing.

I just don't see how he is going to be active with the signing of Rossum. He would have to take Ball or Watkins' place, and short of 2 stellar weeks of practice, I just don't know if I see that happening with a rookie coming off injury.

I'm interested to see how M. Hamlin progresses from here on out. He was becoming a playmaker in training camp, so I hope he can works his way into the secondary sometime this season.

Just dont rush people back from injuries like we did last year. If we have bodies, no need to rush someone back. Let them rest another week and get to 100%.

Yeah, I don't see how he's going to be active either. As I see it, you're probably only keeping 7 LBs on the 45 man roster to go along with 8 DBs. Rossum is going to be one of those DBs. That leaves Hamlin competing with Watkins and Ball for the final spot...

Now, one possibility could be to take Sam Hurd off the active roster and replace him with Rossum. I think the 49ers had Rossum catching passes with the receivers for a couple of weeks in training camp. But that would leave you awfully thin at receiver, so I don't think that happens.

True. Pat Watkins, while not great in the defensive lineup, is routinely one of the first guys busting tail down the field on punt coverage.

Agree. Which LB goes inactive.. Williams, Butler or Octavien? I'd think it's got to be Jason Williams given Butler's occasional pash rush and Octavien's special teams play.

Even with 7 LB's, I still think Mike Hamlin is inactive, at least for Atlanta. I just don't see how they can justify him replacing Ball, who has been decent out there in the secondary, or Watkins, who hasn't messed up noticeably while replacing Sensabaugh and is good on special teams.

Jason Williams had a huge special teams tackle against Denver where there was a lot of green field behind him.

Williams is big, fast and looking to thump different colored jersies.

Steve Octavien will likely sit, IMO.

Campo wants to play him at SS as well as FS, but Mike Hamlin is a pure center fielder who has a knack for INTs. If Campo tries to have him covering TEs, RBs and WRs man to man, he will be putting this guy in a position to fail IMO.
