It’s only three games into the season – a little early to make overreactions. Therefore, the best player on this defense, if not the entire NFL, is still one DeMarcus Ware. Regardless if he’s without a sack, he’s going to need about six more of those game before you should really start to worry.
And even with Terence Newman playing the way he did Monday night, sticking with Steve Smith for pretty much the whole game, you could make the argument that T-New is the defensive leader.
Still, through three games it’s pretty clear – nobody is playing like Jay Ratliff. Actually, he’s pretty much been unblockable through three games. We’ve been watching this for three seasons now and I’m not sure why it’s still surprising.
But at that position, usually something has to give. Ok, so he’s not some fat-daddy, hole-plugger that you just can’t move out the way. But he’s still 305 pounds – not exactly lean. Then again, it’s not hard to see that he was a defensive end too. Ratliff can move, slide down the line, shoot up the field. And the best part of all is that he makes plays.
Actually, better than that is what he brings emotionally. The Cowboys might need a few more “dogs” on defense, but they’ve certainly got one in Ratliff. Big, strong, fast and nasty. Pretty good combination, one that has Hawaii written all over it – again!
