Oakland Won't Be The Romo-To-Roy Barometer

[FONT=verdana, geneva]Cowboys receiver Roy Williams is probably expecting a side-by-side TV graphic comparing his and Terrell Owens' preseason stats.

He knows that if quarterback Tony Romo hits him three straight times on the Cowboys' opening series or two, the immediate reaction will be positive.

Based on the skepticism Williams has heard about his chances to adequately replace Owens' production, he realizes a couple of misfires against the Raiders will feed into that thinking.

"Yeah, but if he goes 0-for-3 then it's 'Why did they make that trade (with Detroit)? Those guys can't connect,'" Williams said, smiling. "We just want to be productive. We just want to drive the football down the field."

Don't expect to take much from a very brief offensive cameo. Everyone should get a better gauge of the Romo-to-Roy rapport around Game 3, the typical dress rehearsal for the starters.

Expect to See Plenty of Alan Ball Thursday

[FONT=verdana,geneva]Third-year defensive back Alan Ball, who moved to safety this off-season, got some extensive reps at corner Tuesday and might play the entire preseason opener given the team's injuries at the position. (Terence Newman, Mike Jenkins and Michael Hawkins are not expected to play.)

Ball, who played corner his first two seasons, likely will alternate between corner and safety against the Raiders. Tuesday's corner reps were more of a refresher course, even though he's worked a little there in sub-packages.

"He knows what to do," secondary coach Dave Campo said. "(We) gave him a few shots out there just to keep him sharp and we'll see what happens."
