Greg Ellis knew the writing was on the wall when the Cowboys drafted Anthony Spencer is 2007, and as of this summer his premonition became reality.
The Cowboys drafted Spencer to take Ellis' job, which finally happened when the 12-year vet was released back in June. Spencer was Wade Phillips original first-round pick as head coach, and presumably the first piece he needed to start building his defense here.
It's no secret Spencer has been a favorite of Phillips' during his two years with the team. Rarely has the head coach had a negative word to say about the former Purdue defensive end. There was an inkling of that today though.
Phillips sandwiched a faint do-better between praise for the start of Spencer's camp (calling it "outstanding") and the assertion that he is a "dominant player in the run game."
Evidently Spencer was a little beat up during the middle of camp.
"Physically, he wasn’t full speed for about a week there and I see him coming back now," Phillips said. "In the game, he played a lot better than he had been practicing for a week. I think he’s just getting healthy . . . We expect more out of he and DeMarcus on the rush. I thought both of them played well, but we expect them both to be more dominant in the passing game. Both of them had some good rushes, but I think they can do better."
In the end, the Cowboys will take what Ware gives them, and happily. Spencer needs to be on his game to justify their decision to release Ellis.
