After the Cowboys suffered attempting to play man coverage against the New York Giants in Week 2, there was a thought that the players would revert back to more zone coverage, which they played so much last season.

Instead, they played a lot of man against the Panthers in Week 3, not shying away from their preseason philosophy to get physical corners matched up on receivers, which should make blitzes more effective.

The difference was Mike Jenkins, who specializes in man coverage. In the Cowboys' rotation it was Orlando Scandrick starting against New York, when the Cowboys gave up 330 passing yards. With Jenkins in, the defense performed better as a whole.

"He covered really well man-to-man in some of the things we wanted to do. It gave us an opportunity to do a lot of the things we wanted to do defensively. I think it helped our pass defense."

We'll keep watching to see if the switch to more man coverage means a better defense.

Usually when quoting someone, you should have the courtesy to explain who is saying the quote. I assume Wade Phillips.

Man coverage means better defense if we get pressure on the QB. The Jets are working this to perfection. If you're only giving a QB two or three seconds to read a defense and make an accurate throw, even halfway decent corners should be able to defend their man. And when you've got a guy like Revis or Good Newman, you can completely shut down great receivers.

I'm all for it, generally speaking. If you are constantly switching up blitzes and continue to hit a QB time and time and time again, I just don't think there are many out there who can stand up to that for a full game without making a critical mistake or two.

Drew Brees might be one of them and he has receivers that can physically dominate and probably create some separation in that two-to-three second span -- that's going to be an interesting game this weekend.

hope jenkins can tackle better because the broncos have some good receivers who can burn you if you miss a tackle playing man.

This goes for all of our DB's.

The tackling has been awful.

With this offense and our pass rushers, pressing the WRs is the best strategy. It makes the QB hold onto the ball longer, giving Ware and Spencer that extra second to make the hit and if they happen to complete one over the top for a score, I have faith in my offense to return the favor.

The problem wasn't our man-to-man coverage, it was the transition of coverage between defensive backs. When a cornerback would release their guy to another defensive back, those defensive backs were either out of position or covering the wrong player.

I agree with this 100%.

You don't even have to press every corner. Just press the guy that you believe to be the primary target.

Carolina ran 3 step drops the entire first half for the most part and we had our coverage backed off.

We came out in the 2nd half and didn't give up nearly as much cushion and absolutely shut them down.

I felt like had we done the same thing vs the Giants we would have had more success defensively because our pass rush was getting there but the pass was getting off to quick.

This defense needs to concentrate on thowing off the timing of our opponents passing attack.

Jenkins did a very good job against Carolina but what was the problem against Tampa? Did we play off more because they tore a new one on our man coverage with Jenkins .

I would like to know what we did different between those 2 games.
