Nick Eatman did a nice job summing up the battle for the starting right cornerback job in his column today. He's right, the guy who has the best training camp should be starting opposite Terence Newman.
Where he's wrong, and where we disagree, is that he believes Mike Jenkins was just as good last year as Orlando Scandrick. Nick's case is that it just seemed like Scandrick had a better year because of draft day expectations. Scandrick, a fifth-rounder, turned out to be a nice surprise, while some of Jenkins' problems might have stuck out more because he was a first-round pick.
The issue I have with his point is that he overlooks the eyeball test. If you didn't know which round the two were drafted in, and just watched the games, it's hard to say Jenkins was as good or better.
I mean how often did Scandrick's guy even catch the ball? And he was on the field more often than Jenkins. He took Terence Newman's job as the slot corner, he was performing so well. This off-season a Cowboys scout told me Scandrick played as well or better than any rookie cornerback in the league last year. That has to include Jenkins.
And please, don't mistake this for me throwing Jenkins under the bus. I thought he was good too. He made a hell of a play to break up a deep pass from Donovan McNabb in Week 2, and his pick-six touchdown against the Giants was the Cowboys' only defensive score of the year. He caught that ball, something neither Scandrick or Pacman Jones did all season. It looks like Jenkins is going to be a good pro.
I just think Scandrick deserves credit for the season he had in 2008, and the summer he's put together out here. If he keeps it up during camp, it's going to be awfully tough to limit him to nickel snaps.
But boy, this really is shaping up to be a great competition in San Antonio.
