There's Room For One More

By cutting the roster to 52 players the Cowboys left open one spot on their roster.

Judging by the numbers at each position, the most obvious place for an addition is in the secondary or linebacking corps. The Cowboys kept only eight defensive backs, and one of them, safety Michael Hamlin, is out another 3-5 weeks with a broken arm. The team currently has only seven healthy linebackers.

Players released around the league will spend 24 hours on the waiver wire. The Cowboys could claim a player cut by another club or sign a veteran. Either way, the likelihood is the Cowboys bring in someone to round out their roster by Monday's practice.

This is the point last season the Cowboys brought back veteran safety and special teams ace Keith Davis after he was cut by the Miami Dolphins. Davis, who signed a free agent deal with Oakland this off-season but was released before camp, is currently available.

The Cowboys don't necessarily have to add a safety because Alan Ball has worked there throughout training camp, so he and Pat Watkins are expected to serve as the backups to Ken Hamlin and Gerald Sensabaugh.

Still, there is a possibility the Cowboys will be adding a player to be on the 45-man active roster opening day at Tampa Bay.

We have 9 linebackers. I doubt they're adding a 10th.

How comfortable are you taking only one inside linebacker backup in Bobby Carpenter to TB?

Is something wrong with Jason Williams? I've literally worked over 150 hours over the last two weeks so maybe I missed him being injured.

He's out 4-6 weeks w/a high ankle sprain.

So 2 of our 9 linebackers are injured. I see the author's point now, thanks. :)

I'm thinking we may take a look at Evan Oglesby.

Anthony Smith is a good choice also.

I like Anthony Smith, too.

He was one of my favs coming out of the draft a couple of drafts ago.

More surprising, perhaps, than Brohm being on the list of cuts is the presence of Anthony Smith on said list. Smith was one of just two unrestricted free agents the Packers brought in (the other was offensive lineman Duke Preston). Neither of them made the team. Smith was released despite seeming to have a good preseason. He may have lost out because of special teams.

Jarrett Bush, an accomplished special teams contributor, was one of those who beat Smith out for a roster spot. With fellow safety Charlie Peprah placed on injured reserve, the Packers may have felt the need to keep the better special-teamer.

The flaw in this was that Smith looked like he was very comfortable in the Packers' 3-4 scheme, a defense he played in with the Steelers. Bush didn't have the kind of preseason in that defense that Smith did.
Sounds like he was playing well with the Packers, just got beat out by a STs ace.
