It's hard enough for a rookie draft pick to make the Cowboys' roster and earn playing time, stacked as it is. The uphill climb for undrafted free agents is even steeper.
But of the 17 rookie free agents the Cowboys signed over the weekend, one may have more than an outside chance, Arizona fullback Chris Gronkowski.
The Cowboys brought in one fullback for a pre-draft visit, Kentucky's John Conner, and had high grades on others. Given the potentail for league punishment against Deon Anderson, the team may need another option at the position, especially if Anderson is suspended.
Anderson hasn't typically been used for more than 10 or 12 offensive snaps a game, but he is a valuable player on special teams. If Gronkowski can excell there, he may have a chance of unseating the three-year veteran. The Cowboys could also be trolling for more fullbacks to take to camp, or sign one another team releases on final cuts.
The Cowboys could have a straight-up competition at the position, in which case the veteran Anderson would have to be the clear winner. His experience gives him a clear advantage, though Gronkowski does have some pedigree.
His brother Rob played tight end for the Wildcats, and went to the Patriots in Friday's second round. He was pretty excited.
Another brother, Dan, was a rookie for the Detroit Lions last year, and their father Gordon played guard for Syracuse, earning three letters.
