Wade Delivers A Few Rare Shout-Outs
Posted by nickeatman at 5/2/2010 9:24 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

While it was clearly Dez Bryant’s weekend for this three-day rookie mini-camp, even Wade Phillips didn’t deny that, giving him a well-deserved tribute.

But Phillips didn’t stop there. Usually after a first impression weekend in only shorts and helmets, you won’t find the head coach to single out players – good or bad.

However, when asked about the non-Dez stars of the weekend, Phillips dished out some credit, especially to a few rookie free agents and little-known first-year players.

“Most of our draft choices certainly looked like we thought they would look on the field,” Phillips said. “We had some guys that had been with us, but Titus Ryan looked well at receiver. He looks really fast. I thought (rookie defensive end) Lorenzo Washington kind of stood out in the things he did.

Phillips also praised some offensive tackles in sixth-round pick Sam Young and Mike Tepper, a rookie free agent from Cal. Phillips also sounded very impressed with second-round pick Sean Lee, the two free-agent safeties in Danny McCray (LSU) and Barry Church (Toledo), along with New Hampshire tight end Scott Sicko, who was also impressive in his deep-snapping skills.

There's a nugget of information to store away for the future.

I was a longsnapper in high school.. if my kid plays football, it'll be the first thing we work on at the house. Your kid can earn a solid $300k+ a year job just by long snapping. Worth the investment surely.

Yup would be nice if he sticks, then we would have a long snapper that can fill 2 rolls

I applaud you. One hell of a plan.

LS is a position our professional friends in the media tend to ignore; but coaches do not. you look at LS's and they make serious money and only as many plays as your punter and kicker combined. Maybe 10 or so at most a game. And now with the new rule it will not be as tough as regards the D trying to wham the guy.

Not sure how much they'll see the field outside of STs but we're adding some talent.

It is nice to know he could do that in an emergency, that's it. We have a near-perfect snapper in Ladouceur. I want nothing to do with trying to get creative with a roster spot and potentially create a problem where there is absolutely no pain right now.

We need to pipe down. If we want a chance of keeping some of these players on the practice squad, calling attention to them needs to be kept to a minimum.

Agreed.

Remember the dead zone we went through several years ago where we had no legit long snapper?

It's an underappreciated position until you're relying on a guy like Trey Junkin.

The Dallas media doesn't have that kind of sense.

If Wade doesn't talk about them, the Dalllas media has nothing to report.

That said, we have 5 pre-season games. Our young'ins will get plenty of exposure so I really don't think it matters what our coaches say right now. If these guys have talent, the league will have plenty of game film to check them out and scoop them up.

True when you get down to it there is no way to hide any player and the other 31 teams have to deal with the same with their drafted and UDFA. I'm not concerned with Phillips handing out kudos to these players.

Hide? Not really. But you can do everything you can to shield them from leaving.

Dixon barely played preseason games due to a variety of "injuries" the past two years. We can also invoke the Rudy Carpenter technique and offer them more money than is typically paid to practice squad players to encourage them to resist other team's overtures.

Every team out there is in the same boat. I don't think it is a big deal to talk up guys who preformed well. The guys who will play will be exposed but the same goes for every NFL team.

no kidding... 3rd/4th TE/FB who can long snap? that makes a bit more sense as to why the Boys really tried to woo him as an UDFA.

We have zero worry there at this point.

While a few of these guys may be PS candidates the others are just glad to have heard their names mentioned on tv. It's clear Wade was tossing them a bone.

If we do want them for the PS they have to be released as free agents again first and could sign elsewhere. We have no hold over them at all.

If you watched the PC, Wade only talked about some of these guys because a reporter asked about them. It's not like volunteered how great these guys were.

He also repeatedly threw out the caveat that they aren't in pads or really playing football yet, and he's only commenting on how they're able to move around.

I tried to teach my brother it, it didn't work.
