With outside linebacker Brandon Williams now out for the season with a torn ACL, the Cowboys may need to consider some other options at the position.
I touched on a few of them on this blog Saturday - the Victor Butler, Steve Octavien, waiver wire options, but what about Jason Williams, the Cowboys' first third-round pick?
He's not too small for it at 6-1, 246 pounds - bigger than Octavien, actually. He's athletic enough, probably the fastest of the Cowboys linebackers, and he showed he can rush the passer Friday, posting a sack-safety in the fourth quarter.
Would it behoove the Cowboys to try Williams on the edge during the preseason, to see if he could at least be an effective rusher on third downs? With Brandon Williams gone, the Cowboys have already done some adjusting, moving Butler from Will (weak side) to Sam (strong side), behind Anthony Spencer. Octavien is the primary backup to Ware for now.
“The way our scheme is, I’m going to doubt it," Williams said today. "But you never know what the coaches are conjuring up, so if they need to put me out there to rush I’d be more than willing to do it.”
Williams played the Will in college his junior year, though not in the same type of front. He led the Gateway Conference in sacks that year, with eight.
So far he's only been working at inside linebacker, but now that the Cowboys are in a numbers pinch, maybe he could do both.
