I talked to Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman in the locker room after last night's game. He was very complimentary of third-year receiver Miles Austin.

Sherman had a lot of players worth bragging about. Patrick Crayton had a nice game, and Mike Jefferson held the crucial block on Tashard Choice's 19-yard touchdown.

But Sherman was especially proud of Austin. The 6-3, 216-pounder led both teams last night in catches (5), and receiving yards (64). He also had a couple nice catch-and-run plays, including one that went 21 yards. Sherman was particularly happy with one reception, a 12-yarder in the third quarter where Austin used his frame to shield the ball from Chargers corner Antoine Cason.

"He was fantastic," Sherman said. "He made some big plays, big catches, and ran with the ball very well. He's big and strong and he's just starting to understand how to use his body to make plays like that. That was great for him. Last year at this time I don't know if he would've made it, but he showed he could do it."

Earlier in camp head coach Wade Phillips said he thought Austin and incumbent Sam Hurd were tied for the No. 3 receiver job.

Sherman deserves a lot of credit and has every right to be proud. It looks like Austin has made huge strides in the nuances of the position in the last year.

If Sherman can do the same with Stanbach, Sherman's worth every penny that JJ is paying him.

Hurd still appears to have trouble shaking defenders. I recall at least 3 plays where the DB was on him tight and Hurd could not shake him. It double sucks because he was facing San Diego's backups at this point.

I thought even before this Pre-season or at least strongly believed in, Austin being the guy that Romo was talking about making that jump.

This was based on what Pacman had to say about him and reading about camp. I think Sam Hurd might be the 3rd reciever type and good special teamer.

Only thing I am not sure about is, if Miles can be a legitimate No 1 or just a good no. 2 at best? I guess only time will tell. He has the physical tools to be a no. 1 in time, if he keeps improving and has the drive obviously.

It's stuff like this, IMO, that will determine the 5th or 6th WR spot.

If Miles Austin can catch a ball on Newman and Pacman, he can sure catch one on Champ Bailey.

Call his number, Jason Garrett. Let Romo go right at Bailey when Austin is facing him.

From the sounds of things Austin has really come on the last week or so.

If you remember, early on the buzz in camp was how Hurd was playing lights out. He was shaking defenders and running great routes. We heard some things from Austin. A blurb here and there. Sometimes we'd hear how he got deep.

But the last week, we've been reading more and more that Austin is the one making the big play. I remember reading several times in the blogs that Austin was using his big body to shield defenders. Hurd seemed rather quiet.

Now, the battle is far from over. Maybe this will be Hurd's week. Maybe he'll begin to take over. Or....maybe....just maybe the light's come on for Austin. Outside of TO, he has the greatest potential of the WRs. In fact, he's a WR in the MOLD of TO...I didn't say "AS GOOD AS TO"....I merely said "in the mold". Big, strong, and fast. Maybe Austin is going to grab the job.

Even if Austin "wins" the job. I think Hurd will play a lot. He has much to offer the team as a WR. He does a great job of running routes. I think he's very good at finding the soft spots in zones.

Austin's development was definitely one bright spot from last night.

Austin was #2 of the guys who impressed me last night. Felix was #1.

Zach Thomas also got me excited. He's going to be huge to our run defense.

Hurd tries hard but he just can't get separation - he is a ST player and 4th WR. He better be working hard on STs if he wants to make the team this year because he just doesn't appear to have much upside as a WR.

Miles Austin is going to be the number 2 receiver opposite of 81 before long. I think Crayton is best inside at the slot.

If Austin can beat out Crayton for #2WR, this offense is going to be scary good with a legitimate deep play threat to open things up underneath for Witten and TO and keep the 8th man back for Barber/Jones.

And he didn't get flagged? How did that happen?

I think the rise from raw suck-itude to last night, Austin has to be #1 on that list. Felix averaged like 8 yards a carry at a big name school, Austin had almost as many yards last night as he's had in two years.

This is what I am hoping for. If Austin can be to Owens what Harper was to Irvin, we will be a very dangerous passing unit.

He is likely #3 on my list. He will make us forget Ayodele. I just wish he were 10 years younger.
