I talked to Cowboys receivers coach Ray Sherman in the locker room after last night's game. He was very complimentary of third-year receiver Miles Austin.
Sherman had a lot of players worth bragging about. Patrick Crayton had a nice game, and Mike Jefferson held the crucial block on Tashard Choice's 19-yard touchdown.
But Sherman was especially proud of Austin. The 6-3, 216-pounder led both teams last night in catches (5), and receiving yards (64). He also had a couple nice catch-and-run plays, including one that went 21 yards. Sherman was particularly happy with one reception, a 12-yarder in the third quarter where Austin used his frame to shield the ball from Chargers corner Antoine Cason.
"He was fantastic," Sherman said. "He made some big plays, big catches, and ran with the ball very well. He's big and strong and he's just starting to understand how to use his body to make plays like that. That was great for him. Last year at this time I don't know if he would've made it, but he showed he could do it."
Earlier in camp head coach Wade Phillips said he thought Austin and incumbent Sam Hurd were tied for the No. 3 receiver job.
