How Much The Starters Will Play?

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said the staff would figure out by Wednesday just how much the team intends to play the first units against the Bengals this Sunday night in Canton, Ohio.
That seems like it’s not an easy decision for anyone. That preseason game will likely have more energy and excitement – not just because we’ll be at the Hall of Fame, but it’s the first football game in six months. But after a series – maybe two – all the starters are gone.
I’m sure NBC would love for the Cowboys and Bengals to mix it up for a quarter or so, but it’s just not smart, especially since both teams still have to play four more preseason games.
Then again, we’ll see sideline interviews throughout the game from the Cowboys and ex-Cowboys like T.O., Pacman and maybe Roy Williams.
As for the starters, I wouldn’t give them more than one series – regardless what happens. One drive, hopefully it’s not a three-and-out, and then pull them. The only exceptions might be Doug Free and Deon Anderson. You want to see a little more out of Free on the left tackle spot and Anderson is one of just two fullbacks. I wouldn’t think Chris Gronkowski will play the entire game at fullback.
Also, this might be a good time to at least see Kyle Kosier some at center.
On defense, maybe Alan Ball gets a few more reps than the others – and maybe he gets some cornerback looks too. But the rest of them should be in and out.
But with Dez Bryant’s injury last week, don’t expect the Cowboys to be too risky with their starters, regardless what the fans or networks might desire.
*(this was a rather short article, so I included it all)
