How Much The Starters Will Play?

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said the staff would figure out by Wednesday just how much the team intends to play the first units against the Bengals this Sunday night in Canton, Ohio.

That seems like it’s not an easy decision for anyone. That preseason game will likely have more energy and excitement – not just because we’ll be at the Hall of Fame, but it’s the first football game in six months. But after a series – maybe two – all the starters are gone.

I’m sure NBC would love for the Cowboys and Bengals to mix it up for a quarter or so, but it’s just not smart, especially since both teams still have to play four more preseason games.

Then again, we’ll see sideline interviews throughout the game from the Cowboys and ex-Cowboys like T.O., Pacman and maybe Roy Williams.

As for the starters, I wouldn’t give them more than one series – regardless what happens. One drive, hopefully it’s not a three-and-out, and then pull them. The only exceptions might be Doug Free and Deon Anderson. You want to see a little more out of Free on the left tackle spot and Anderson is one of just two fullbacks. I wouldn’t think Chris Gronkowski will play the entire game at fullback.

Also, this might be a good time to at least see Kyle Kosier some at center.

On defense, maybe Alan Ball gets a few more reps than the others – and maybe he gets some cornerback looks too. But the rest of them should be in and out.

But with Dez Bryant’s injury last week, don’t expect the Cowboys to be too risky with their starters, regardless what the fans or networks might desire.

*(this was a rather short article, so I included it all)

Thanks CCBoy. Two series would be nice. Three would be great. I forgot just how many ex-Cowboys were on the Bungles. Although I really only count SS Roy Williams as a true ex-Cowboy. T.O. is an idiot, and Pacman... well, I won't even go there.

I would hope the starters only get 1 series. After all not only do we have 5 pre season games but the 2nd pre season is 4 days later on the following Thursday

1 series if its a decent drive or 2 short ones hopefully. A three and out won't give them much work.

I'd like to see no starters play this week. We know who our starters are. It's full contact baby so just take the night off. Why put wear-and-tear and possible injury on your regulars, with four more freaking preseason games to play yet?

(I started a thread a while back showing that no team playing in the HOF game the last five years has made their conf. championship game that year (later that same season I mean), despite at least one real good team being scheduled on purpose in the HOF game every year ... so it appears it's not a competitive advantage - the extra week of training camp or extra game that is ..)

So start McGee first and third quarters and Nichols the other two quarters.

Play Lonyae Miller or Herb Donaldson the whole game at RB. As I cry excitedly from my couch, "Herb, Herb, Herb!" ... I might shout "Lonyae!" if I knew how to say it.

It's a free game, no worries. Play all the kids.

I'm thinking the same way, IO would rather the starter play the second game, and treat that game like its the first preseason game.

I want Teddy Williams running back the opening kickoff.

I want Josh Brent at NT.

I want McGee and Nichols at QB.

I want Tepper, Brewster, Bright, Costa, Young.

I want Gronkowski, Sicko.

I don't want Akwasi, man that's rushed into playing like Josh Brent was. Akwasi would be at risk too.

I want Terrill Hudgins. And maybe Manny J. has surpassed Holley. Let's see them all. Dang we all know what Hurd is all about. (And the off-season analysis says Hurd dropped/misplayed as many opportunities as Roy W. last year. The epitome of consistency was Crayton (and Austin of course), according to the numbers ...

Last year in preseason, we went 2-2. Without me checking, it's been like a decade or more since we actually had a winning record in preseason. A true reading on our backups. Thanks to Ciskowski and some intelligent scouting hires, we may be on the upswing there ..

went 3-0-1 in 2006

I'd like to see a quarter since it's the HOF game.

I would like to see the offense score on their first possession and sit out the remainder of the game. No more than 2 series. Plenty of games to watch them play. They need to remain healthy.

Parcells was fired after that season. We went 9-7 that year, no playoffs. ..

So much for my theory anyway, laythewood, Thanks. I'm usually right, anyway ..

But I bet with the ole' crapmaster Parcells we played starters like crazy that preseason ... We all were driving to the Seven-Eleven for more beer that dim August night of early August 1996 when Drew Bledsoe was going to be our recently signed "savior" (I don't want to offend any Christians who think I'm equating Drew Bledsoe, a smart and accomplished but over-the-hill NFL QB, and our Lord and Savior ..

Damn, we all said, we're going to the Super Bowl ..

Well, now I have to ask when was the last time before that we had a winning record in the preseason ..

Let's face it. Jerry was slow to throw out the Larry Lacewells and the "Jimmy recommended" and "Switzer recommended" minions off the scouting staff. We suffered from 1995 to 2005 or so because of it.

we made the playoffs that year and somebody dropped the hold for a fg with a minute left in the game.

You sure? :D
FYI parcells wasn't fired, he retired.
We made The playoffs in 06. (Tony Romo's bobbled snap)

The ball was greased. I'm sticking to it.:)

1 series for all the starters. That’s it. Anything more than that is not only risky but pretty dumb at this stage of the preseason.

guys i do not want any starter playing in this game. we have five preseason games i vote and wait until next thursday to let the starters play.

I think we will see the starters for 1 series (2 if it is short) in game #1 and #2.

We will see about a quarter of action in game #3. Maybe two quarters in game #4. And not at all in game #5.

I'll be fine with that.

First series three and out with Buehler attempting an 82 yarder!;)
