SAN ANTONIO - Jerry Jones' first thought when he heard Dez Bryant was injured on the second-to-last play of Friday's practice was to wonder whether the young receiver's workload was too heavy.

It is a bit of a conundrum, since as Jones said in a pre-camp press conference, two of his main interests during preseason workouts are to keep everyone healthy and ensure the top pick Bryant receives every rep he possibly can. Bryant's injury was something of a fluke, caused by cornerback Orlando Scandrick falling on the back of his legs while making a play on the ball, but Jones has pointed out players are more likely to get hurt if they're tired.

One thing Jones says he likes about practicing in the climate controlled Alamodome is that players stay fresher and can get more work done - something that can also be said for the site of the second leg of Cowboys training camp, Oxnard, Calif.

"You can get endurance built up out here," Jones said. "But you sure get about 30 percent more reps in this dome than we would out in the hot Texas heat or most heat. And, of course, we'll get those kind of reps in California, but I'm really pleased with what we're putting in."

Jones said Friday he was being analytical in asking if Bryant's injury could've been averted by taking fewer practice repetitions, not critical of what the coaching staff was asking of the rookie. The Cowboys are hoping Bryant can return by the regular season without being too far behind because they are currently ahead of schedule in the installation process on offense.

"The way the teams practice in pro football today in the spring, there's a lot put in as far as the passing game," Jones said. "You do get a chance to really refine some things they put in in the spring. The team's looking good as far as the work it's doing, and guys are working hard."
