JOSH ROBBINS - AUSTIN, TX: Who would you start at left tackle, Doug Free, or the more experienced Alex Barron?

Rob: They released Flozell Adams because they felt Doug Free was ready to start. He needs to be given that opportunity. If it doesn't work out, then Barron looks like good insurance. He's started 74 of 76 career games, including two seasons at left tackle. He'd be the best swing tackle candidate on the roster besides Free.

Nick: Thankfully, it's May 7. We don't have to answer that right now and neither do the Cowboys. While I believe in offensive line continuity and that a decision needs to be made long before the first game of the season, I don't think it has to be done right now. Let's remember the Rams just drafted Sam Bradford No. 1 overall. Marc Bulger's blind side wasn't exactly protected and the Rams have been doing everything they can to replace him. So his experience is a little deceiving in my mind. Then again, Free has NEVER played left tackle. So I hate to do it - I'm going to sidestep this question. It's just too early.

QUINN TAYLOR - HAMMOND, LA: When did this coaching staff make up its mind on Bobby Carpenter, and why did they view him differently than Bill Parcells?

Rob: Phillips rarely shows public disappointment in his players, but in 2008 he mentioned the preseason finale against Minnesota as Carpenter's missed opportunity. That said, Carpenter did do some good things in the Nickel last year. He's probably always been a better fit in a 4-3, and St. Louis would give him that chance.

Nick: If you look at the guys Wade has put at outside linebacker, all of them have been college defensive ends. It's clear that Wade views the outside linebackers as pure pass-rushers and the college type linebackers play inside. I'm not sure when they made their mind up on Carpenter or really don't know what that means. But to them, he was an inside backer and he wasn't good enough to beat out Kevin Burnett, he wasn't good enough for them to not sign Zach Thomas or Keith Brooking or draft Jason Williams and now Sean Lee. And I'm not so sure they viewed him differently than Parcells, who didn't want any part of him at Miami when the Cowboys were reportedly trying to trade him last year.

The only fan that would ask such a dumb question is a fan that doesn't even follow the team, and only knows what Jamie Dukes tells him.

Yep, they released Flo and just hoped they could aqquire Barron to start

krimpets rule!

Ok I'll play along, Free. Although after training camp I might be tempted to start Barron over Colombo but nah.. I expect Colombo to be 100% by the time preseason starts...

It will be called an "open competition," but ....

I honestly think Barron is more of a contingency plan with COLOMBO rather than with Free.

Well JOSH ROBBINS from AUSTIN, TX when did they legalize dope? :laugh2:

Some of our fans are complete idiots. I hope that Josh is not a forum member who will read this.

As we enter training camp, Free is my starting tackle, but Barron is more than welcome to try and earn the position. Hell, he is more than welcome to try to earn either tackle position.

Not sure which is worse, the question or Nick's answer to the question. Does Eatman really not know who is going to start?

There's no guarantee Colombo will ever play at the level he was playing at prior to his injury in 09'. Barron is a contingency plan for Colombo THIS year in my opinion.

Brewster has no experience in the NFL, and the Cowboys needed to get more PROVEN depth, because everyone would agree that:

Barron > Brewster/Young at this point.

Maybe Houck can pull a Colombo and make Barron into a viable starter at RT.

Do you honestly think Nick Eatman knows? I realize fans who write questions to these mailbag columns would think that a writer who works for the team website would be able to answer that question, but that is asking too much.

Frankly, doesn't matter who starts, both are good AND it means Dallas beefed up its depth at a key spot. I'll take it, don't care who starts
